Message to FCC: Internet Not Broken
Is the Internet broken? It appears the FCC would like you to believe that it is. They're in the midst of pursuing an aggressive regulatory overhaul to “fix” the Internet that we all use and enjoy today. But remember the old adage: " If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
      Inventing to Survive in Cuba
In 1991, Cuba’s economy began to implode. “The Special Period in the Time of Peace” was the government’s euphemism for what was a culmination of 30 years worth of isolation. It began in the 60s, with engineers leaving Cuba for the Unites States, and continues in part today, under the longest trade embargo in modern history. When Ernesto Oroza, a Cuban-American designer and artist, began studying the technological innovations that have been made during this period, he uncovered a trove of homespun, Frankenstein-like machines that ordinary citizens made for their survival, out of day to day objects.

Calling all developers! FCC releases APIs for key databases
Perhaps you've been burning to build an online feature around some interesting government data source; if so, the Federal Communications Commission just made the task simpler. The agency has released the Application Programming Interface (API) specs for four of its big repositories of information: its consumer broadband test, broadband provider database, license owner storehouse, and latitude/longitude to county converter. "We want the FCC's Web presence to be larger than a single Web site," FCC Geographic Information Officer Michael Byrne posted on Tuesday. "We want the developer community to run with these APIs to make mash-ups and data calls connecting FCC data assets to other sources for creative and useful applications to the public." Although the Commission has done a fine job of making its public filings much more accessible, that's only the tip of the vast data iceberg which is the FCC. The biggest challenge is figuring out where this juicy stuff actually resides at fcc.gov. Read the comments on this post

Its designers created the image to give drivers who travel at the street’s recommended 18 miles per hour (30 km per hour) enough time to stop before hitting Pavement Patty–acknowledging the spectacle before they continue to safely roll over her.

      Google Scribe
Google launched a very interesting tool that offers suggestions as you type: Google Scribe. It's not exactly the service I anticipated 3 years ago, but Google Scribe works surprisingly well. For example, I started to type "This works sur" and Google suggested "This works surprisingly well", which is exactly what I wanted to type. Instead of typing 14 characters, I could only type "1" or press Enter to select the first suggestion. "Google Scribe provides text completion service. Using information from what you have already typed in a document, Google Scribe provides related word or phrase completion suggestions. In addition to saving keystrokes, Google Scribe's suggestions indicate correct or popular phrases to use," explains Google. The nice thing about this service is that you don't need to use Google's editor. You can add a bookmarklet to your browser and use Google Scribe in Gmail, Blogger, Google Docs or on any web page that includes text fields.Google Scribe only works for English right now, but I'm sure that Google will add many other languages in the future. If you don't like to see suggestions for all the words you type, enable the on-demand mode (Ctrl+Shift+J) and you'll only see suggestions when you press Tab.
Dairy Chooses Cooling Over Cow Shit to Green Its Data Center
Müller Dairy has announced its new UK data center will green up by incorpating energy efficient APC InfraStruXure In-Row cooling systems, which focus on cooling specific hardware rather than the entire server room. Retro Car Goes From Canada to Mexico On a Single Tank
Energy efficiency has only recently become a popular concern among vehicle owners, but some people have been thinking about it for a long, long time. Craig Henderson and Bill Green designed the Avion, a fuel-efficient sports car, in 1984. Two years later, the vehicle set the Guinness World Record for fuel economy, getting an average of 103.7 mpg all the way from the Mexico border to the British Columbia, Canada, border. Now Henderson has revived the Avion for another jaunt from Canada to Mexico. The latest iteration of the vehicle is just 1500 pounds and features an aluminum monocoque frame, a carbon fiber, kevlar and fiberglass body, and Goodyear "Fuel Max" tires. After receiving a sponsorship deal from Goodyear, Henderson decided to go from border to border once again--this time, on a single tank of gas. Jalopnik reports that Henderson began his latest journey on August 29th. He stopped only to go to the bathroom, grab food, and catch a night's rest. The result: Henderson burned only 12.4 gallons on his journey to the Mexican border for a fuel economy of 119.1 mpg, breaking his own Guinness World Record from 1986. (He drove at a pretty constant 55 mph.) Henderson is gearing up for limited commercial production of the Avion. If our fascination with fuel economy is any indication, he won't have any trouble selling it. Below, check out a video about the Avion from 1982.[youtube umDk0_01nmY] Ariel Schwartz can be reached on Twitter or by email.

      PAX 2010 Hands-On: Drumskulls (with World-Exclusive Screens!)
Remember Evan's E3 preview of Rock of the Deadfrom a few months back? Where you could strum specific note patterns to shoot zombies? The problem with that, according to Andrew Laing, creator of the new, never-seen-before-PAX title Drumskulls, is that Rock of the Deaddidn't deviate far enough from the Rock Band/Guitar Heroformula. Despite having zombies as a backdrop, it's still very much in the "music game" genre. Drumskullsis not. It's all about shootin' some zombies... with your plastic drum set. I had a chance to try out Drumskullsat PAX, and I dug it. It's by a company that's so grassroots indie that they don't have a website yet. They don't even have a name. Andrew Laing is the man in charge, however, and you can expect some big things from him. So, the zombies marching toward you on the screen are four different colors. To shoot a zombie of a particular color, you hit that drum (it'll be compatible with any Rock Band/Guitar Herodrumset). Despite their slow zombie pace, when a dozendifferentlycolored zombies are coming toward you at the same time, it's gets really intense. Each drum hit is one shot, and each zombie takes multiple blasts to finish off. Hitting a drum pad to shoot a zombie is very visceral; it's quite a different experience than merely using a gamepad. The bass pedal will be implemented in the final product somehow, too, but it wasn't quite ready to be used in the version I tried out at PAX. The game is on-rails, but there are plenty of secrets to discover; one in particular I found was a red dumpster that you blow away to open a hidden path through the level. The game is still very early in development (they stayed up until 4 a.m. coding the last level, in fact - that's so indie!), and they don't even have a publisher or a platform to release the game on yet. It's situated to be a downloadable title, though, and it's looking good so far. Check out some gameplay footage from the show floor (and don't mind the dork on the drums - that's just me): I also got in tight with Mr. Laing and he sent me some WORLD-EXCLUSIVE SCREENSHOTS that you won't see anywhere else, including this one of the never-before-seen Baron Samedi: Believe it or not, this is one of the good guys. Baron Samedi is your mentor in the game world, and the Commander of the Drumskulls. There weren't a lot of details regarding the storyline released, but Laing confirmed that the game would feature seven levels, as well as boss fights. Stay tuned here for more news on the game, and look for it on various downloadable services (XBLA? PSN? WiiWare?) if and when the game gets picked up by a publisher. Until then, enjoy some screenshots that you won't find anywhere else:

Mashable Readers Say Craigslist Should Not Be Censored
Over the weekend, we noticed Craiglist had replaced a certain notorious section of its site with a black bar reading censored.A longtime and well-known digital resource for prostitutes and the people who engage their services, Craigslist has come under fire many times over the past few years for its erotic/adult classified ads. Craigslist has stated it does everything it can to comply with government and legal stipulations and has an attorney manually screen all of its Adult Services ads. The company once said that 700,000 ads were manually rejected in just one year.Still, this hasnt stopped sex trafficking on the site, nor has it stopped the site from coming under harsh criticism for its business. In a recent poll, we asked if you thought Craigslists Adult Services section should be censored. Here are the results. Our readers are surprisingly liberal-minded about the Adult Services section. The vast majority of you (71.37%) said you thought the site should not be censored for a variety of reasons:Among our readers who thought the site should be censored, two-thirds found the Adult Services section objectionable because they felt it allowed Craigslist to profit indirectly from prostitution.Of those who thought the site and the adult sections should remain uncensored, almost half of you (46.15%) felt the censorship was unwarranted because prostitution should not be illegal in the first place. These broad-minded folks comprise almost 33% of everyone who voted in the poll.Others who were against the censorship in this case thought that Craigslists anti-prostitution policies were sufficient or stated another reason for opposing Adult Services censorship. As of this moment, were not sure if or when the sites adult section will be back online or why it was taken down in the first place. While prostitution isnt likely to become legal in the U.S. any time soon, well keep you posted on Craigslists dilemma as more details become available.More About: censorship, craigslist, prostitution, sexFor more Social Media coverage:Follow Mashable Social Media on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Social Media channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

ACLU: Obama Is Embracing Abusive Bush Policies
For disillusioned Obama supporters, the ACLU's July report "Establishing the New Normal" is not a heartening read. After being voted into office on promises that included undoing abuses carried out under the Bush administration - promises to protect privacy, to end government-sanctioned torture and rendition programs and to end the use of military commissions for non-enemy combatants - President Obama's administration is proving it is far easier to tow the line than buck a trend.
Army Vet, 80, Busted In Pot Raid; Had Given Names To Plants
An 80-year-old Minnesota man is facing felony charges after a marijuana raid, with police claiming he is the leader of a what they called a "large-scale grow operation." Welcome to the world of American drug enforcement, where an old man tending a few plants -- at least some of which he had apparently given names -- passes through the Drug War looking glass and becomes magically transformed into a major grow-op.
MIT app turns your Android phone into a supercomputer... of sorts
Oh, sure -- a few people have called Google's Nexus One a "superphone," but suddenly, that nickname has taken on a whole new level of meaning. A team of talent from MIT has put its head down in order to concoct a new Android application that can come darn close to solving complex computational problems in just a fraction of the time that it'd take a bona fide supercomputer. The goal here is to let researchers and scientists convert to Google's mobile OS, but if you aren't falling for that one, it's also designed to "let engineers perform complicated calculations in the field, and to better control systems for vehicles or robotic systems." Of course, the models that are hosted on the phone do require a supercomputer to create, but once certain formulas are embedded, the app can then compute approximations in mere seconds rather than hours. Best of all, rbAPPmit is available for download as well speak in the source link below, but we'd probably wait for the (presumably thick) user guide to surface before diving in headfirst. Why does Steve Jobs play fast and loose with iPod touch sales numbers?
"Part of the problem is that the statement, on the face of it, is absurd. As of January, Nintendo had sold 125 million DS systems. Sony (SNE), for its part, has sold more than 62 million PSPs. As of last week, according to Jobs, Apple has sold some 120 million iOS devices -- a number that covers not just the iPod touch, but tens of millions of iPhones and iPads as well. There's no way the iPod touch could be considered the world's most popular portable game player."

Is Android Only Surging Because Apple Is Letting It?
This weekend, I've been catching up on some reading. One post that was of particular interest to me was David Beach's article from last week about developing for Android. Beach, who is a product manager at eBay Mobile and a co-founder of 12seconds, basically says that the experience sucks for a number of reasons (all of which Google can fix, but will take quite a bit of work and time). But one quote in particular stuck out to me: Android has succeeded despite Google. In fact it's safe to say that Android is successful for one primary reason. The iPhone is only available on AT&T. If the iPhone was on Verizon a year ago. Android would be no where near as popular. Obviously, Beach isn't the first person to bring this idea up. But he brings it up in a way that he's able to back-up his feelings from a developers' perspective, while at the same time roping in what isn't ideal from a consumer perspective about Android as well.

Samsung suggests Galaxy Tab will cost between $200 and $400 -- also coming to Vodafone UK
Early reports indicate Europe will pay a pretty penny for Samsung's Galaxy Tab, but the 7-inch tablet may cost a good bit less when it comes to US shores -- the Wall Street Journal paraphrases a Samsung executive who claims it could run between $200 and $300 depending on the all-important carrier subsidies. The Korea Times, meanwhile, suggests a $300 to $400 retail price according to a different Samsung bigwig, who added that the Tab "will cost slightly more than the Galaxy S smartphone." As you're probably aware, Sammy's Galaxy S typically retails for about $200 in the US -- excepting Sprint's Epic 4G at $250 -- so if you held a bursting Li-ion battery to our head and forced us to guess, we'd say the latter range of dollar signs is far more likely. By the way, Vodafone UK shows the Galaxy Tab as "coming soon." Hit our more coverage link for details. You Know Who Likes WikiLeaks? Fidel Castro.
An editorial yesterday in the LA Times called Fidel Castro, Internet Junkie says the 84-year-old Cuban reads 200 to 300 online articles a day, and is fascinated by WikiLeaks. The LA Times article is based on an lengthy interview Castro did with the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, where he reportedly said that the Internet, has put an end to secrets. We are seeing a high level of investigative journalism, asthe New York Times calls it, that is within reach of the whole world. He also said that the Internet is, the most powerful weapon that has existed. Castro, however, isnt just an Internet consumer hes also apparently a prolific blogger (one of about 300 in Cuba). So now you know. (Note: Isolated Cuba does not have a fiber-optic connection to the rest of the world, and must rely on old underwater telephone lines and for satellite-based broadband to connect to the Internet. The LA Times editorial says that estimates put Cubas Internet penetration of between 2.6% -13% of the population depending on whether its based on international (the 2.6%) or Cuban government statistics (the 13%). Either way, Cuba has by far the lowest percentage of Internet users of any nation in the Western Hemisphere. Those that do have access face censorship and restriction as well.) Blogging And Mass Psychomanipulation
If I ever write another book it will probably be about one of three topics. The first is the truth about how the press and journalism really works the sausage making to show just how much of a beautiful, subjective and chaotic mess it all is. The second idea is to talk about how perfect blogging is, with its constant feedback loop, as a training ground for mass psychology and manipulation. The third idea Im keeping to myself for now, but its more startup focused. Its the second one thats been on my mind lately. Mostly because its become pretty clear to me that any blogger worth her salt could start, say, an extremely successful militant religious cult. Any blogger will tell you how frustrating the early days are. Getting someone, anyone, to link to you. Your first comment! etc. And as your audience grows you are introduced to the first rule of anonymous human behavior its dark and brutal, and reminds me how thin the veil of civilized behavior really is. If there is something nasty that can be said, someone will say it. Over and over. A big part of blogging is simply keeping the peace. You set rules on whether or not youll allow anonymous commenting, or commenting at all. You decide if/how to moderate comments. You decide if/how to respond to opposing arguments and (more often) personal attacks. And you, involuntarily for the most part, evolve your writing in response to the feedback loop. Those are the days of innocence, simple joys and simple sadnesses. But then you start to get really good at what you do. You write something and you get trashed. The next time you try it a little differently and it the commenters love you. You dont even do it consciously but over the years you just get better at it. To the point where you pretty much know exactly what the reaction will be to any given post, and how to tweak things to get the reaction you want. Zynga talks about constant A/B testing in its games to maximize revenue, a huge competitive advantage for them. Bloggers go through the same thing every time they write a post. Old media types dont have quite the same experience because they generally have an editorial agenda, certain writing rules, and editors to please. There are too many layers between them and the direct feedback loop. so they evolve much more slowly. Bloggers have a direct line to the collective mind. I imagine priests and rabbis and career politicians have much the same experience. Speaking publicly so frequently they learn exactly how to manipulate the audience, or the camera, to get the reaction they want. It doesnt work on every individual, but the masses as a group are easy to manipulate. and your audience tends to self reinforce over time, meaning the people who buy what youre selling tend to come back for more, and others wander away. In a post last weekend I wrote about women in tech. I feel like Im on pretty firm ground here, since more than half of our senior staff are women, including our CEO, and we cover female entrepreneurs whenever we find them. I know exactly the post I could have written to get a super big high five from our audience. Talk big about how the problem is so prevalent, talk quietly about what we do directly to help solve it (but note how much more we must do!), and then salute the ringleaders who are making a living out of pretending to care about the issue (without, of course, pointing out that they are frauds). Seriously, I could have had you as a collective group eating out of my hand on that one. I even pointed to a couple of posts by men that did exactly that (also very experienced bloggers who know how to write a crowd pleaser when they need to). I didnt do that though. I wrote a different post that I intended to question some of the basic assumptions that are being made about women in technology. And I knew exactly what the comments would be like. More FU than high five, for example. And thats ok with me. Id rather say what I really think than pander to the crowd. This is an issue thats too important to use for my own popularity. It would be so much better if we could stop a lot of the bullshit that we see in blogging. To do that we need a smarter audience one that sees through it because theyve been trained to, and demands a little more meat on the bone from the sites they frequent. Im telling you flat out that any decent blogger can manipulate the hell out of their audience. Dont let yourself be one of the manipulated. In a follow up post I may explain some of the common tricks to manipulate the crowd so you can see through them more easily in the future. And just for the record, we try to avoid manipulating readers here at TechCrunch. Or at least to abuse that power as little as possible. And most of my favorite blogs also play it straight. Remember this, though. When youre reading something here thats getting you really riled up, stop. It may be that you really should be thinking the exact opposite of what you are. And if you find yourself floating through a post agreeing with all the subtle pandering, wake up! And call us on it immediately. And yes, I know exactly what you as a group are going to say in the comments below. If I told you it would change the outcome, of course. But I think you know deep down that Im right.
New Fabric-Dyeing Technique Uses Fluid-State CO2, Not Water
A Dutch company has unveiled what it believes to be the first commercial dyeing machine to replace water with supercritical carbon dioxide—a pressurized form of the gas with unusual liquid-like properties. Heated up to 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) and pressurized to 74 bar, CO2 takes on the characteristics of both a liquid and a gas, allowing for the dissolution of compounds such as dyes.

Wikipedia Founder Says Apps, Not Paywalls, Could Save the News
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said in an interview with the Associated Press yesterday that paid apps like those found on the iPhone, Android and iPad could help financially troubled news organizations, but he didnt have anything positive to say about charging for content on the web.On the other hand, hes not optimistic about other micropayment plans wherein publications would charge users to access individual articles because at present there is not a centralized and widespread payment system as there is with Apples services (iTunes, iBooks and the App Store) or the Android Market. If I just click on my iPad, and its billed on my normal bill, that micropayment model makes it possible for people to have an impulse purchase, he said. Apple already has his payment information from the get go, and the creator of each app can use Apples billing system for in-app purchases.Thats one of the reasons Wales believes app stores could be beneficial for the news industry. The apps model the iPad app, the Kindle does provide new and interesting opportunities for newspapers.Weve heard rumors in the past that Google has a unified micropayments system in the works that could do the same for desktop content, but it hasnt happened yet.Wikipedia is not a commercial enterprise, but Waless current venture Wikia is ad-supported.Image courtesy of iStockphoto, enot-poloskunMore About: amazon, android, apple, apps, interview, ipad, iphone, Jimmy Wales, journalism, Kindle, monetization, News, paywalls, Wikia, wikipediaFor more Social Media coverage:Follow Mashable Social Media on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Social Media channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

Android accounts for one-quarter of mobile web traffic, says Quantcast
It's terribly difficult to get reliable statistics, as numbers tend to vary drastically depending upon whom you ask, but if you're inclined to believe that Android is mopping up Apple and RIM's declining mobile mindshare in the US, you'll find nothing but corroboration from Quantcast. The analytics firm reckons a full one-quarter of mobile web traffic stateside comes from devices running Google's OS, though it's important to know that the iOS tallies apparently don't include the web-friendly iPad. You also might want to note that this is mobile web traffic here -- these days, we spend an increasing amount of our internet time in apps -- and since we're on a roll with the disclaimers, let's just add that these numbers have nothing to do with a company's financial success. Nokia can attest to that.Android accounts for one-quarter of mobile web traffic, says Quantcast originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 04 Sep 2010 19:02:00 EDT. Whiskey from diabetics' urine
Gilpin Family whisky is a new single malt whisky made from the urine of diabetics. Creator James Gilpin doesn't sell the stuff, but rather gives away bottles as a public health statement. From the product page: Sugar heavy urine excreted by diabetic patients is now being utilized for the fermentation of high-end single malt whisky for export. The Whisky market is growing faster then any other alcoholic beverage worldwide. With a prevalent genetic weakness being exposed in the northern hemisphere leading to a sharp rise in type two diabetes, economists have found a new exportable commodity to exploit and are keen to capitalize on this resource quickly. Large amounts of sugar are excreted on a daily basis by type-two diabetic patients especially amongst the upper end of our aging population. As a result of this diabetic patients toilets often have unusual scale build up in the basin due and rapid mould growths as the sugar put into the system acts as nutrients for mould and bacteria growth. Is it plausible to suggest that we start utilizing our water purification systems in order to harvest the biological resources that our elderly already process in abundance? Nikon wants to create a 'new market' with its new concept
We thought Nikon just wanted to join the burgeoning ranks of mirrorless interchangeable lens shooters that bridge the gap between full-fledged DSLR and pocket-friendly compact cameras. But oh no, as company president Makoto Kimura puts it, Nikon wants to create a whole "new market" with its next big idea. Noting that his lab lackeys have tested all sorts of eccentric possibilities, such as a head-mounted display, Kimura says it's time for digital cameras to move with the times and Nikon will be ready to take up its usual leadership position. When might that be, you ask? Well, in classic bigwig style, he keeps the roadmap tucked firmly inside the breast pocket of his smoking jacket, but at least we know that Nikon won't be sitting on the sidelines and letting whippersnappers like Sony's NEX-5 steal customers away.Nikon wants to create a 'new market' with its new concept originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 04 Sep 2010 06:25:00 EDT. The Fundeds Adeo Ressi Arrested After Virgin America Incident
The Funded founder Adeo Ressi was arrested and briefly detained earlier this evening over an altercation with a flight attendant. The airline? Virgin America, which Ive been holding up as virtually the only airline that doesnt suck (See Virgin Airlines Fails To Commit Atrocities On Flight VX746 and Delta Flight 1843 From JFK To Hell). Ressis description of the incident is below, and he has sent this to Virgin, he tells me. Ive reached out to Virgin America for their position. I cant help but note the similarities with Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater, who has now been rewarded for his behavior with a reality tv show. The worse the flight attendant, the better the chance for fame and glory, I guess. You posted something nice about Virgin America a little over a week ago. I actually agreed until I was briefly and wrongly arrested as a result of a stressed out flight attendant today. I am horrified by the incident on VX22 today, after flying over 70,000 miles with the company. Here are the details. I was on flight VX22 in seat 2B, First Class, under the name Adeodato Gregory Ressi di Cervia. My company, the Founder Institute, is enrolling hundreds of entrepreneurs from eight cities into the incubator, so I was working before taking off. I shut everything down when the cabin door was shut, and started working again when the Internet was turned on at 10,000 feet, reviewing founder applications. The first class steward, the ITL, served some food, but otherwise ignored passengers. There was a young stewardess in the back of the plane that brought me two ginger ails, some nuts, and Pringles. It was strange that the steward ignored passengers, focusing his attention on a baby in the font row, but I didnt really notice much, since I was busy. As we started to descend, the captain came on and asked everyone to shut down computers and electronic devices. The ITL walked down the isle immediately following the captains announcement and tapped my computer to indicate that I should shut off my computer. I looked up, nodded and indicated that I needed a second to finish an email, and he walked past me into coach. By the time he returned, approximately 60 to 90 seconds later, I had finished the email at exactly 5:33 PM EST (according to email records), and I was closing the laptop lid. He stood above me, and the ITL said in a loud voice, I told you to close the computer. You need to listen to me. You need to obey my orders. I am in charge. I told you to close the computer. You need to listen. I am in charge. Not you. This went on for a while. It was awkward, uncalled for and embarrassing. Meanwhile, I was holding the closed computer up off the tray table for everyone to see, as it was being shut down even before he walked over. He then said, I can contact the authorities and have you arrested. I responded, I have done nothing wrong. Go ahead, if you like, I have done nothing wrong. Now, a few minutes after the original announcement by the captain, the ITL walks up to the bulkhead phone, and I presume he calls the captain. The captain then makes an announcement that everyone should have their devices off or the authorities will be contacted and meet us upon landing. My device was already off for a few minutes at this point, and I ask for the ITLs name, who now completely ignores me. As we continue to descend, I had a bag on the floor in First Class, which I know is not allowed on Virgin America First Class because I have flown over 70,000 miles on the airline. So, I ask the ITL to put the bag up, and he responds, get up, and put it away yourself. I get up, and then the ITL starts yelling at me again for standing up when the plane is below 10,000 feet. I toss the bag into the overhead, leaving it open, sit down quickly and he calls the captain again using the bulkhead phone. He then comes over to shut the overhead compartment. At this point, we did not speak again during the flight. We land at 5:49 PM, 16 minutes after I closed my computer down. We taxi to the gate, and there was a 15 minute delay while the authorities were called. Two NYC police men escorted me off the plane. Passengers are delayed even further as the police interrogated me in front of the exit door. Once I start moving up the platform, escorted by two police men, and the passengers are finally let out. Three First Class and Main Cabin Select passengers agree to be witnesses on my behalf to the police, taking more of their valuable time to say that I did nothing wrong. Meanwhile, I was detained for an hour at the gate by police, who eventually let me go, jokingly referring to this as an argument over a cell phone to the TSA. Meanwhile, the Virgin America captain lectured me twice on the importance of turning your computer off, without even listening to my side of the story. The ITL told the police a story that I had been disruptive at other points in the flight, and the police said that the Virgin America flight team were now defending each other. The police also clearly indicated that they thought the ITL was not telling the truth. The police and the TSA had no charges. You can get the police report for the names of two supportive First Class customers. I am extremely disturbed by this incident in First Class on Virgin America. I request that Virgin America (1) terminate the ITL in question and (2) refund my money for the whole trip, allowing me to purchase alternative travel home. I do not want to wind up with this ITL on my flight again, as I have recognized him from my 70,000+ hours of flight with the airline. I a law abiding citizen that has never gotten more than a mild speeding ticket, and I fly over 250,000 miles per year. I never raised my voice. I never cursed. I followed the captains instructions. Yet, I was removed from a Virgin America by police for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Thank you. Adeo Ressi

Craigslist Censored: Adult Section Comes Down
Bad news for Craigslist users who like to peruse the Erotic Services Adult Services section of their site. Its gone, replaced by a large black and white censored logo. Ive reached out to Craigslist for comment and await their reply. But the choice of words is significant the section wasnt simply removed, the censored word was used. The site has been embattled as old press and state attorneys general use any excuse to blame sex crimes on the site. From South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMasters failed crusade against them to a variety of press stories about sex and other crimes. If its just a sex crime it isnt a story. But if a listing on Craigslist was involved, its a big story. Craigslist has fought back using little more than their blog and logic. And theyre right. Having prostitution up front and regulated, as Craigslist does, means less crime is associated with it. Its not like prostitution, sometimes called the worlds oldest profession, was invented on the site. The fact that eBay and others do exactly the same thing, but without human review and moderation, doesnt seem to matter. Craigslist Sex is what scares the general population, and its what the press and the politicians will continue to use to get their hits and votes. So the Craigslist Adult Section was removed. Is the world now a safer place? [crunchbase url="http://www.crunchbase.com/company/craigslist" name="Craigslist"]

Why This New Apple TV Makes Sense For Now
As a longtime Apple TV owner, Ill admit a dirty little secret: I really like the device. Sure, it has been one of the rare flops for Apple in recent years. And it could be so much more with say, a Blu-ray player or a web browser. But it is really good at its core functionality: bringing iTunes content into your living room. And thats why this new version of the Apple TV makes sense at least for now. When I first bought the Apple TV, there were two varieties: a 40 gigabyte version and a 160 gigabyte version. I was torn between which one to get, but I ultimately went with the 160 GB one thinking I could put most of my movies on it. Big mistake. I basically never use the hard drive on my Apple TV, so its a 160 GB hard drive sitting there doing nothing. Instead, I stream everything to the Apple TV. In fact, the only time I do use the hard drive on my current Apple TV is when I rent a movie on it. Currently, even when renting, you download a movie to your hard drive where it sits for up to 30 days (or 24 hours after you start playing it). But with the new iTunes rentals (both TV and movies) everything is streamed no hard drive is required (besides a small one for buffering purposes). Thanks to that, and undoubtedly the knowledge that most owners were using it for streaming, Apple removed the hard drive from the device, and cut it down in size and price. Now, at one-forth the size and less than half the price, its an even more attractive way to get your iTunes content into your living room. And it has a few very nice bonuses. The mixture of the new Netflix functionality with Apples new release rental movies makes this an excellent in-home movie machine for the masses. For those who pay $9 a month to Netflix, you get access to tens of thousands of older movies. For those interested in newer movies, theyre $4.99 a pop from Apple. Yes, Apple removed the option to buy movies on the Apple TV itself. But you can still do this through iTunes on your computer or on your iPad/iPhone/iPod touch. And guess what? With the forthcoming AirPlay feature, youll be able to stream any of those purchased movies right from any of those devices to the Apple TV. In a way, it sort of does make the Apple TV a $99 iPad accessory. Further, the removal of the option to buy (as well as the removal of the SD options) make Apple TV much less complicated for general consumers. Now there is no question about whether you should rent or buy. There is also no question about whether you should do rent or buy in HD or SD. I suspect most people were renting in HD on the device, which is why Apple made the move it did to eliminate the other unnecessary options. Theyre keeping it simple, stupid. Apple also removed the option to buy TV shows which never really made much sense to me. There are some shows that people would like to own, but most are definitely watch-once programs. Previously, there was no rental option, you had to buy. Worse, even if you did want to own a lot, the old Apple TV didnt have nearly enough storage to handle them all some HD TV show seasons take up 30 GB of space or more. The model just didnt make a lot of sense. Granted, Apples current $0.99 TV show rental option is pretty weak. They only have shows from ABC and Fox and only some shows from Fox. But obviously, just as happened with iTunes music and movies, Apple is hoping all the studios eventually get on board. And if they do relatively soon, the Apple TV will be a very interesting device to consumers as both a movie box and as a potential cable replacement. Sure, most people arent going to feel comfortable totally killing cable just yet but at $99, this will be a very interesting experiment for a lot of people. All that said, lets be clear: this Apple TV is not the killer device in the living room. This will be more popular than the current Apple TV, but it will not be iPod/iPhone/iPad-big. And Apple seems to know that, which is why theyre still talking cautiously about it. The problem Apple faces is the same problem that everyone faces: content agreements. Hollywood is proving much harder to convince than the music labels were. In a few years, if DVD sales keep falling and cable revenues start decreasing, theyll be more receptive to new options. The killer Apple TV would have TV network subscription packages. It would offer live events. It would have every movie ever made available on-demand. And on-demand is the big key to all of this. All of this content is going to move to the cloud. It has too for storage purposes and given how many devices we all have. Rentals just completely made the jump, but eventually purchases will too. At first, youll have the option to download certain movies youve bought to take on the go, but when youre at your home, even movies you own will be streamed theyll simply be streamed for free. And then one day, all of this stuff will be in the cloud entirely as mobile devices will always be connected by high-speed wireless. This is the future. Its Apples future along with everyone elses. This Apple TV is one small step in that direction, and at $99 it makes sense for now at $229, it never did. This is a stepping stone to the cloud age. Right now its a mixture of the internal cloud (streaming from within your house) with the external cloud (streaming rentals from the cloud). Soon it will all be external. If this half-step isnt your thing, if you want morefunctionality, buy a Mac mini. Theres a reason Apple just added a HDMI output to it. But that device is too complicated and way too expensive for most consumers to use as a set-top box. The Apple TV is simple. Oh, and one more thing: the true killer Apple TV device will have apps. Im still absolutely convinced (as many people are) that its only a question of when they make the jump to the living room. The fact that this new Apple TV is running iOS seems to be all the proof one should need that this will come eventually. When that happens, the Apple TV will become a hell of a lot more than a hobby.

      Mary Roach: Death In Space
For some uplifting weekend reading, I suggest Mary Roach's excellent special Boing Boing feature "Death In Space." The U.S. has plans for a manned visit to Mars by the mid-2030s. The ESA and Russia have sketched out a similar joint mission, and it is claimed that China's space program has the same objective. Apart from their destination, all these plans share something in common: extraordinary danger for the explorers. What happens if someone dies out there, months away from Earth? Swedish ecologists Susanne Wiigh-Msak and Peter Msak are the inventors of an environmentally friendly alternative to cremation and burial, called Promession. The technique entails freezing a body, vibrating it into tiny pieces, and then freeze-drying the pieces, which can then be used as compost to grow a memorial shrub or tree. "Death In Space"

Google Settles Buzz Privacy Lawsuit for $8.5 Million
Google has agreed to pay a hefty sum to make a class action lawsuit concerning Google Buzz disappear $8.5 million, to be exact. The lawsuit dates back to February, when lawyers filed a class action complaint against Google on behalf of Eva Hibnick, a 24-year-old Florida resident and Harvard Law School student. The complaint alleged that Buzz violated several communication privacy laws related to protecting user privacy.Google Buzz caught a lot of flak for its auto-follow and opt-in features, so much so that Google quickly made privacy fixes after launch. They werent enough to quell the criticism though, so Google launched a privacy reset for Buzz, giving users a new opportunity to adjust their privacy settings.According to the settlement, these changes addressed the key privacy issues surrounding Buzz. Google has made changes to the Google Buzz user interface that clarify Google Buzzs operation and users options regarding Google Buzz, it stated.Thats not all, though. While the settlement acknowledges that Google Buzzs privacy issues have been resolved, it says the company must do more to educate users about Google Buzzs potential impact on privacy. The $8.5 million from the settelement will go towards lawyer fees (30%) and the seven named plaintiffs (up to $2,500 each), with the remainder going towards organizations and non-profits focused on Internet privacy. Now that the privacy issues have been settled, Google can focus on a more important problem: actually producing a winner in the social media space.[via AFP]More About: Googl, google buzz, law, lawsuit, privacyFor more Tech coverage:Follow Mashable Tech on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Tech channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

The physics of breaking stuff with your fists
iO9 recently ran a story on how martial artists are able to break boards and cement blocks, using their hands rather than mystical powers. I thought it was pretty neat, but then I read an interesting counter-analysis by science journalist (and, significantly, martial arts practitioner) John Rennie. iO9 is right about the lack of magic powers, he says. But they got the physics wrong. Key slip-up: Assuming martial artists strike like a cobra—fast punch, with a quick pull back at the end—when they have their smashing fun times. iO9's theory was that that movement caused the boards to bend and snap. But that's not how it works, Rennie says. In fact, martial artists are taught to follow through with their punches, aiming not at the board-to-be-broken, but at a point beyond it. So how's the breaking really done? Rennie quotes an episode of the awesome old PBS show Newton's Apple: One key to understanding brick breaking is a basic principle of motion: The more momentum an object has, the more force it can generate. When it hit the brick, [karateka Ron] McNair's hand had reached a speed of 11 meters per second (24 miles per hour). At this speed, his hand exerted a whopping force of 3,000 Newton's -or 675 pounds-on the concrete. A slab of concrete could likely support the weight of a few people weighing a total of 675 pounds (306 kilograms). But apply that amount of force concentrated into an area as small as a fist and the concrete slab will break. The fact that martial artists also pick their materials very carefully doesn't hurt, either. When breaking wooden boards, you use pine (not oak, not mahogany) that isn't marred by dense knots, cut inch thick and about 12 inches on the diagonal; you hit them to break along the wood's natural grain. (It's not playing by Hoyle but some breakers have been known to bake their boards in ovens before demonstrations to make them more brittle.) One good board, if held securely so that it won't move on impact, is so easy to break that even those with no training at all can be taught to do it in under five minutes. P.S.: Rennie's blog, The Gleaming Retort, is part of a new family of science blogs, hosted by the Public Library of Science—a non-profit that publishes open-access science journals. I highly recommend checking out the entire PLoS Blogosphere. Slow motion video of things being destroyed Science of Scams: Derren Brown and Kat the Scientist debunk the ... Google Wave to Rise Again on Its Own
Google Wave was once one of Google's hottest projects, promising a new way of communication that might even replace email. Alas, it was not to be, and Google shut it down soon after public launch due to lack of user adoption - but not completely.Wave still draws interest from users, although it turned out to be more of a niche product than a massively disruptive tool. Recently, Google promised to keep Wave alive at least until the end of the year and to open source some parts of it.Now, Google has finally decided what to do with Wave. According to a recent blog post, Google will release most of the Wave code in the form of an (almost) complete application, which Google calls "Wave in a Box."For exact deatils on what this bundle will include go here, but it seem to be enough for developers to pick up where Wave left off and create their own, complete app based on the code.Yes, Wave was a failure in Google's hands, but we'll sure that developers will find a way to instill new life into the project. Who knows, maybe soon we'll see a better Wave, and maybe this new version will (finally) conquer the hearts of users. For more Tech coverage:Follow Mashable Tech on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Tech channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

Important: Gmail Priority Inbox Should Now Be Available To All
Its hard to remember a product Ive become so dependent on quicker than Gmails new Priority Inbox. Im so addicted, that the few times Ive accidentally clicked on the old regular Inbox view in the past week have really annoyed me. So much so that I actually moved that view into my more drop down (you can drag any sidebar item in there). And now I have good news: you can all share in this addiction. While it began rolling out to users on Monday, Google is now saying that Priority Inbox should be available to all users (including Google Apps users) today. Look for the New! Priority Inbox message in red in the top right corner of your Gmail account to activate it. Theres a slight learning curve with it, so youll still probably want to watch Googles official video. But once you get started, its unlikely that youll go back. Overwhelmingly, the people Ive talked to since the feature started rolling out on Monday are also now addicted to the feature. But some seemdeadestagainst it,insteadpreferringto use their own filters to better tailor their mail consumption. Im a big filter user myself, but I simply could no longer keep up with the amount of message coming into my inbox I needed someone, or something to sort it for me. This isnt a longterm solution for the email problem, but it will work for now. Have you been using Priority Inbox this past week? If so, what do you think? Leave a comment or tweet about it. Tweet

NASA Plans to Visit the Sun
If youve seen Danny Boyles movie Sunshine, you may be a little disappointed: NASAs mission to visit the Earths Sun wont include sending people up there. But it will be sending a spacecraft into the Suns atmosphere, approximately four million miles from its surface. The project, called Solar Probe Plus, is slated to launch sometime before 2018.Four million miles doesnt sound very close, but its still very exciting, since this is a region no other spacecraft (created by us) has ever encountered. NASA plans for the project to unlock the suns biggest mysteries.Although the spacecraft will be relatively far from our stars surface, its carbon-composite heat shield will have to withstand intense radiation, as well as temperatures exceeding 2550 degrees Fahrenheit. The experiments selected for Solar Probe Plus are specifically designed to solve two key questions of solar physics why is the suns outer atmosphere so much hotter than the suns visible surface and what propels the solar wind that affects Earth and our solar system? said Dick Fisher, director of NASAs Heliophysics Division in Washington.Weve been struggling with these questions for decades and this mission should finally provide those answers, said Fisher.[Image credit: NASA]More About: mission, NASA, space, spacecraft, sun, SunshineFor more Tech coverage:Follow Mashable Tech on TwitterBecome a Fan on FacebookSubscribe to the Tech channelDownload our free apps for iPhone and iPad

House Built From Hemp Is Full Of Green Surprises
All images from Push House In much of the world, hemp is thought of as a useful building material; Warren recently showed us an interesting house from Australia and it is common in the UK. But in America, it is still the butt of hippie jokes; Matt Hickman of the Mother Nature Networks describes a new house in Asheville, North Carolina with references to Tommy Chong and describes the interior: "there's not a blacklight poster, hanging spider plant, or crumpled up Cheetos bag in sight." Discovery News says "Put aside old visions of burlap-like shirts that belong with hacky sacks." Even the owner tells CNN ""We heard that we could have a really great neighborhood party if it ever caught on fire." It's a shame that everyone is focusing on that, because it is just one interesting product in a fascinating house that is full of surprises.... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Google Announces Wave In A Box
Google Wave is far from dead, and developers, early adopters and enterprises will be glad to hear it. Today Google announced it will expand on the code it has already open sourced, building Wave into a functional application that will allow users to run wave servers, host their own waves and build bigger and better applications with the real-time collaboration technology. "Since the beginning, it has been our vision that the Google Wave protocols could support a new generation of communication and collaboration tools," engineer Alex North wrote on the Google Wave developer blog. Sponsor Google had big plans for Wave - it was supposed to replace email and the killer app among Google Apps, but the company basically gave up on the project earlier this month (see Google Wave Is Dead). It still seems possible for the technology to do big things. But it sounds like Google plans to move on after the application is released. The future of the open source project will be defined by developers' contributions, North wrote. Wave In A Box will not have the "full functionality" of the Gmail-integrated Web app, but it will feature threaded conversations and support importing data from wave.google.com. The release of Wave as an application could be a big deal for developers, especially at businesses that want to take advantage of Wave for real-time collaboration and discussion (see our post, 5 Services That Leverage Google Wave). Wave was always intended for people to run on their own machines, but this release will make the process much easier. Developers and enterprise users that have been eyeing Wave will be more likely to take the technology into their own hands and build things like feature-rich Web forums, productivity tools and apps to facilitate collaborative projects. Google did not specify a timeline for the release of the new code, but it has said that wave.google.com will be available at least through the end of the year. Discuss

Twitter Mobile Usage Skyrocketed With Official Apps [STATS]
Since Twitter acquired Tweetie and rolled out an official iPhone client, the company has focused more and more on improving the mobile experience across all smartphone platforms.Twitter CEO Ev Williams wrote just now on the company blog that mobile usage of the site is up 62% since in just over four months, and 16% of all new Twitter users are starting out on mobile devices as opposed to web signups (this number is up from just 5% earlier this year). In the days before Twitter started issuing official apps on a platform-by-platform basis, the company wasnt seeing the kind of mobile adoption it had hoped for. Williams wrote, Even though there was a plethora of third-party Twitter apps, people were having trouble finding and selecting one because none were called Twitter. This kept them from using Twitter at all.The company adopted a new strategy for mobile; rather than leaving all the mobile app development to third parties, Twitter decided to consolidate efforts. In the short term, this caused some consternation for third-party devs; however, looking at Twitters stats, its clear the company did the right thing for its shareholders and bottom line.Twitter acquired Tweetie in May this year; this was our first indication that Twitter would be creating and distributing its own mobile apps for a change. Tweetie was revamped and renamed Twitter for iPhone in May. A BlackBerry app was released in April, and the companys official Android Twitter app was released later the same month.Twitter is also seeing strong growth in its mobile site and SMS service, and Williams notes that third-party apps such as TweetDeck continue to be valuable and important parts of the Twitter mobile landscape. And as for the long tail, Williams writes, There are a tremendous number of other apps that people are using, not necessarily as their main Twitter client, but as an alternative way to create or view Tweets. The number of registered OAuth applications is now at almost 300,000 this number has nearly tripled since Chirp [Twitter's developer conference, which was held in April in San Francisco].While the above chart shows percentages of unique users per app, wed also love to see a breakdown by volume of tweets.Has your own mobile usage of Twitter changed or grown at all with Twitters releasing several official apps? Do you still use third-party applications for tweeting on the go? Chrome reaches second birthday, version 6 goes stable
When Google launched its Chrome Web browser in 2008, it was clear that the product had considerable potential. Its emphasis on performance and a its intriguing minimalistic user interface attracted a lot of well-deserved attention. Today, exactly two years later, Chrome has over 80 million users, a 7.52 percent global market share (21.87 at Ars, making it the second most popular browser here behind Firefox), and is gradually creeping into the mainstream. It wasn't entirely clear at first if the browser would have real staying power or if it would be cast aside unfinished like so many of Google's other ambitious *cough*Wave*cough* experiments. But Google's commitment hasn't waned, and it's increasingly evident that the browser is an important part of Google's platform strategy and long-term aspirations for the future of the Web. To mark Chrome's second anniversary, Google has announced the official release of Chrome 6, a new major stable version of the browser. Read the comments on this post

Another oil rig explosion, and the science of dispersants
Another oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded today. All crew members survived. Right now, nobody knows whether or not the explosion caused a leak in any of the seven wells that the rig collects from. There have been reports of an oil slick on the water near the fire, but that could just as easily be from the finite amount of oil stored on the rig—which would still a spill, but a significantly less problematic one. Other than that, there's not really much information out about this right now. If anybody's learned anything from Deepwater Horizon it seems to be that you're better off, PR-wise, if you don't have to correct everything you say two days later. To give you something to chew over in the meantime, though, Deep Sea News has been doing a really interesting series on the science (such as it is) of oil dispersants. It's interesting, not just because of the basic facts, but also because it gets into the details of why we don't know more. Dispersants must be applied successfully and have a high effectiveness once in ocean waters. This sounds easy, in principle--once you've perfected your Corexit formula in the lab, just spray it from a helicopter, and voila! Except there are a lot of factors which you also have to take into account: the composition of the oil spilled, sea energy, whether the oil has been subjected to weathering at all, exact type of dispersant used and the amount which you sprayed, and ocean temperature/salinity. Thank goodness for all those lab tests over the years which figured all this stuff out, you say. Um, well actually it seems like even designing simulation experiments is difficult, and different tests can report different effectiveness scores for the same dispersant. It is difficult to accurately scale up lab tests in order to predict dispersant action on real spills. Older studies used methods and analyses which have since been discredited. Wave-tank tests can probably provide upper limits on dispersant effectiveness, but there are SEVENTEEN (!!) critical factors that require strict control for accurate results (Fingas 2002). Field tests in open ecosystems are even worse for measuring the fate of oil and controlling variables. In terms of measuring dispersant effectiveness, tank tests, field tests, and lab tests all disagree. Awesome. Part 1: How effective are dispersants on real oil spills? Part 2: How toxic are dispersants? Part 3: Do dispersants really promote degradation of oil? Image of a random oil rig: Some rights reserved by kenhodge13

7 Traits of Real Men | Mocha Dad
Men were made to be bold, strong, leaders. However, our society has attempted to repress these traits. If you look at the way men (especially dads) are portrayed on TV, you’d think we were all a bunch of irresponsible, befuddled, nincompoops, who can only function with the help of a “smart” female partner, friend, or spouse. Consequently, many boys are confused and have no idea what it takes to be a real man. They seek inappropriate role models and emulate the bad behavior that they see on a regular basis. It is our duty as men, fathers, and responsible citizens to counter these negative images and raise a new generation of men who are respectful, loving, and willing to contribute to society in a positive way.

Happy Birthday Chrome, You’re About To Overtake Firefox On TechCrunch
As we pointed out earlier, today is Google Chrome's second birthday. Since it launched in beta on September 2, 2008, it has come a long way (it's already 6 versions deep). Back then, it was Windows-only, with official Mac and Linux support only coming late last year. But now it's on the verge of another milestone: becoming the top browser coming to this site. I've checked out our logs over the past few years to see how well Chrome has been doing compared to its rival browsers. The numbers are shockingly strong for such a new entry -- particularly in the past year. Obviously, TechCrunch has a tech-centric audience, but I don't think it's off-base to say that you're also a leading audience of early adopters that often point to where the general public will be in the future.

When someone robs a store, the clerk can throw the ball at the perp (or at the perp's feet) so they're easily identified after they escape. According to the Japan Times, though they're only thrown in 7% of robberies, the balls mostly work as a deterrent, since stores prominently display them. They're so visible that foreigners in Japan often wonder what they're there for. And in the video below, the clerks act adorable as they awkwardly explain why the visiting American shouldn't try to buy those orange balls on the counter. via:// reddit Permalink|Email this|LinkingBlogs|Comments
What Final Fantasy XII and Heavy Rain Have in Common
It stands within reason that Final Fantasy XIII and Heavy Rain should have a lot more on the classics of yesteryear. They should have evolved significantly in the overall quality of experience–from gameplay to graphics, each title has had more than enough time to improve itself. But for some reason, they fail to be as immersive as they should be. What went wrong?
The 7 Most Irritating Characters From Otherwise Great Movies
Man Spends 62 Years Building Fleet Out of Matchsticks
Philip Warren spent the past 62 years faithfully recreating an armada of 432 Royal Navy warships out of matchsticks and wooden matchboxes. Over the last six decades, he has painstakingly crafted every naval warship afloat, in service or to have come in since the second World War. 79-year-old Philip, a retired company director from Blandford, Dorset, England, began creating his first ship in 1948 when he was just 17. He uses a razor blade, tweezers and sandpaper to carve the matches and boxes before piecing them together using PVA and balsa wood glue. In total he has utilized more than 650,000 to create his incredibly detailed 1:300 scale models. Very impressive, sir. If it weren't for professional sports and video games, we'd probably be in a basement gluing stuff together, too. Keep reading for a closer peek at some of Philip's work. ...

60% Of Apps In Android Market Are Free (Vs. 30% Or Less In Other App Stores)
App store analytics provider Distimo yesterday published its latest report, once again zooming in on the pricing of mobile applications across a variety of platforms. Consistent with its previous findings, Googles Android Market has by far the largest share of free applications available compared to other mobile app store, but the gap is also widening. In July 2010, 60% of all applications on Android Market were free of charge, representing an increase of 3% since May 2010 when it was 57%. As you can tell from the graph below, that share is more than double the share of free apps on other mobile app stores, with the exception of Palms App Catalog (albeit barely). The share of free applications is smallest on Windows Marketplace for Mobile (22%), followed by the Apple App Store for iPad (26%) and BlackBerry App World (26%). (click image for full size) Lets take a closer look at the prices of paid apps across mobile application stores. Distimo posits that the average price of the 100 most popular apps in Android Market and Palms App Catalog is higher than the average price of the entire catalogue of applications. While the average price of all applications is only 16% higher in the Apple App Store for iPad than in the App Store for iPhone, the average price of the 100 most popular applications is nearly three times as high in the former. More than 60% of applications are priced below or equal to $2.00 in the App Store for iPhone, Android Market, Nokias Ovi Store and Palms App Catalog. The proportion of applications priced below or equal to $2.00 is much lower in the App Store for iPad and Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Notably, it seems prices of apps for iOS devices are on the rise. The proportion of paid applications priced below $1 on the Apple App Store for iPad and Apple App Store for iPhone has decreased in both in July 2010, from 30% to 25% and from 49% to 45%, respectively. Twitter Just Killed Something Else: Their Own Website. Twitter For iPad Is That Good.
Are you addicted to Twitter? Do you have an iPad? Even if the answer to both is no right now, after you see Twitter for iPad, those answers are going to change quickly. Yes, the wait is over. Launching tonight in the App Store is Twitter for iPad the first official native iPad app from the company. We all knew it was coming (Twitter even said so a few months ago), but it has been a long wait. It was definitely worth it. Like most people, I wander into hyperbole from time to time. But it has now been a few days since I first played with Twitter for iPad, and I still think it is hands-down the best iPad app out there. Its that good. With all due respect to Reeder, Instapaper, Flipboard, and Pulse, this is now going to be my go-to app for just about everything related to reading news. Its simply such a great experience for reading tweets and more importantly, reading the links your friends share. What Twitter (and developer Loren Brichter specifically) has done is create an amazing user experience for reading information. This is thanks to an intuitive user interface that layers on top of itself. So, for example, if I click on a link in my tweet stream, Ill have a new layer that rolls over to show that webpage in a customized browser window. If youve used Flipboard, its somewhat similar, but better because its much easier to go back to where ever you previously were before you clicked the link. You simply swipe something to the side to move it temporarily or swipe it again to get it off the screen (in portrait mode anyway, where theres less space). Something else thats awesome: when you highlight a tweet by clicking on it, its now pinned to the top or bottom of the screen as you scroll through your stream. This is great if its something you want to reference. A lot of thought has been put into these type of saving state actions within this app. Its simple to save a draft and go back to it, for example (much easier than with Twitter for iPhone). Or to reference one of these pinned tweets in your own tweet. There are also some great new gestures that Twitter came up with for this app. For example, if you pinch-outward on a tweet, it will unfold to show you more information about the Twitter user. Better may be the way you can swipe down with two fingers on any tweet to see a full conversation in context. Its the little things like this that make the app great Apple-like, even. Overall, the app looks and feels quite a bit different from Twitter for iPhone (which Twitter built from Tweetie Brichters client that they acquired earlier this year). But Twitters Leland Rechis assures me its using all the same stuff on the backend. In fact, Twitter is now a universal app meaning its one app that will work on both the iPhone and iPad, it will just look different depending on which device youre using it on. Rechis also says Twitter started experimenting with some newer things on the iPad version that havent yet been brought to the iPhone version, butundoubtedlywill. A great example here is that when you click through to a users profile page, youll see at the bottom a list of users similar to that user that you may like to follow. Rechis also notes the importance of the logged-out view something Twitter worked on before the iPhone version launch. Twitter wants to make the service as useful as possible to people even if they dont have an account. The idea, of course, is that theyll hopefully sign up for one and this app may give them the most reason to yet. When logged out, youll be able to see tweet streams based on hot topics. Tweets in general are not just what Im doing, they have an incredible amount of metadata, Rechis says speaking to why they created this layering idea for the app. Almost 25 percent of all tweets now have a link in them, he says. This app is perfect for those tweets, and content consumption and exploration in general. Rechis notes that one of his favorite things about tablets is how they eliminate window management. At the same time, you need some way to manage all this information. He notes that Brichters original concept was stacks of sheets of paper that you quickly shuffle through. Other members of Twitter including Rechis refined that idea and the end result is Twitter for iPad. Thats 750 words about the app but you really just need to see it, and use it. It will definitely be my go-to way to browse Twitter from now on. Its that good.

Confirmed: T-Mobile G2 will have Android 2.2, Flash and 800MHz CPU
T-Mobile is calling it "the fastest smartphone experience in America," but as it turns out, its Qualcomm Scorpion CPU is actually relatively slow -- the cellular carrier's insider newsletter T-Mobile Scoop says the phone's MSM7x30 chip will be clocked at 800MHz, rather than the 1GHz we'd hoped for. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that T-Mobile lying about speed, as anyone who's upgraded from Droid to Droid 2 very well knows -- bloatware can easily clog the pipes even on phones running Froyo, and we've heard that this particular HTC device is running a pure vanilla Android build. Speaking of delectable operating system revisions, T-Mobile confirms you'll indeed find Android 2.2 under the hood accompanied by Flash Player 10.1, as well as "one-touch quick keys" the carrier claims provide Speedy Gonzales-like access to apps and shortcuts. Still waiting to be confirmed: a $200 subsidized price, and the day we'll see it in stores. Jobs suggests that competitors' device activation tallies may be inflated, Google quickly responds
Not satisfied to simply trump Google's daily device activation numbers, Steve Jobs added insult to injury at the Apple press conference this afternoon, claiming that unspecified "friends" have been counting handset upgrades in their statistical totals and not just newly activated phones. As you might imagine, Google was not terribly pleased at this turn of events, and issued the following retort: "The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services." Now, we don't honestly know who's telling the truth here and we'd like to be able to take both companies at their word, but this isn't the first time even during this particular Apple shindig that questionable claims were thrown out as fact. Plan for nationwide free wireless broadband finally shot down
For four years the Federal Communications Commission tossed the idea around like a beach ball: a coast-to-coast free wireless service across the low end of the 2GHz "AWS-3" band. The service would pay for itself via advertisements and by selling commercial access to various portions of the license area. The company that proposed the plan, M2Z Networks, would commit to building out the project in a decade, and pay five percent of its annual revenue to the United States Treasury. But on Wednesday M2Z informed the press that the FCC has told the company and its backers that the Commission is dropping the concept, and that is so: "We gave careful and thorough consideration to the proposal, butultimately determined that this was not the best policy outcome," Ruth Milkman, chief of the FCC's Wireless Bureau told us. "We remain vigilant in our efforts to facilitate the universal deployment and adoption of broadband, especially through the much-needed reform to the Universal Service Fund." Old Digg Crushes New Digg in Reader Vote
In the debate between the old version of Digg and the new Digg, the readers have spoken.Last week, Digg launched version 4.0 of the popular social news website. Its been a rocky road pre-launch, so why would it be any different post-launch?Since the launch of the New Digg, which introduced the ability to follow friends, a faster architecture and personalized news, users have been in revolt, mostly over the types of stories reaching the front page. Digg has since addressed some of these issues, but the debate rages on.Last week we asked you, the Mashable readers, for your opinion on Digg. Which did you prefer: The new digg or the old one?The old version of Digg was clearly your choice. With a full 78% of the vote (4,808 votes), the classic version bested the new versions 12% (747 votes). Four percent of you (230 votes) said it was a tie, while 6% of you (348 votes) said you werent a fan of Digg.In the comments, the debate surrounded features that were available in the old version that werent in the new one, including the ability to bury stories and the ability to check upcoming stories. Many of you were also quick to point out that the new Digg is designed to broaden the appeal of the social news website, rather than limit it to its current niche of tech-savvy users. Were going to revisit this debate in the future, when weve had time to reflect on the changes happening at Digg. In the meantime though, we want to hear your thoughts on this debate in the comments. Great news for Europeans and those few U.S. users of music streaming service Spotify. Sonos, creator of the super cool (my descripton) S5 music player, is announcing today that users will soon be able to listen to streaming Spotify music through their Sonos devices. That means users will now be able to listen to music files stored on any computer in their home as well as Spotify, Rhapsody, Napster, Deezer, Pandora and other services. U.S. users still have to wait for Spotify to launch here, of course, or find another way to access the service. On the upside, Sonos says their iPad controller app will be hitting iTunes sometime soon. So theyve got that going for them, which is nice.
5 Reasons Why Apple TV Is (Still) Boring
We know the new Apple TV is really small, and cheap and easy-to-use. That's all good, but still not knocking our socks off despite being the ripest area for expansion by a company that has already firmly established itself on the computer, phone, portable media player and tablet. Here are five reasons Apple TV is still boring.
Sports Car Breaks Suicide Jumper's Fall
In a city with so many skyscrapers, we can understand the allure of jumping off the top of one to end it all. It's faster than pills and cheaper than buying a gun. Unless you happen to land on somebody's parked sports car. And live. And that's exactly what happened to New York resident Todd Magill, who jumped 40 floors to what probably should have been certain death, only to wind up with only a broken leg, collapsed lung and shattered ankle. Oh, and he freaking totaled Guy McCormack's 2008 red Dodge Charger (above). Well, technically it belonged to McCormack's wife. Hopefully he's not in trouble with the missus. Magill jumped off the rooftop of the West End Towers on 52nd Street, where he lived a year ago (apparently security's a little lax), and reached a drop speed of 126 miles per hour before crashing McCormack's car. He's expected to make a full recovery. Aside from the embarrassment, that is. That's probably going to stick around for a while. ...
Windows Phone 7 goes gold master, begins rolling out to partners for final launch preparations
If you've been holding yourself back during these early rounds of the smartphone wars in anticipation of Windows Phone 7, your wait just got a tiny bit shorter. Today Microsoft is announcing that its fancy new mobile operating system has been released to manufacturing, making the idea of you holding an actual WP7 device in your hands that much closer to reality. The finished product is now rolling out to partners around the world where it will be getting carrier and manufacturer tweaks and additions, and going through the kind of pre-launch testing you would expect for a release of this scale. If you had any doubt that the Windows Phone 7 onslaught was close at hand, feel free to abandon them now. Furthermore, the folks on the 7 team have managed to cram a few last minute goodies into the OS, one of which we're particularly excited about. As you probably know from our in-depth preview of an early version of the software, we had a lot of issues with overflowing Facebook contacts in our phone. Microsoft has now solved that problem by enabling a contact filter system which looks for pre-existing matches to your Facebook contacts. If it doesn't find a match, it doesn't pull that contact into your address book (kind of like how Android filters Facebook friends). It's a welcome addition and should make the Facebook / Windows Phone 7 combo a lot more palatable to to a lot of people. Furthermore, Microsoft has added functionality into the People Hub which will allow you to "like" someone's posts, and you'll be able to comment directly onto someone's Wall right in the hub. The company has also made tweaks and fixes focusing on feature discoverability (another issue we pointed out in the early look), along with the expected set of polishing and finish you'd expect from a product that's gone gold master.Windows Phone 7 goes gold master, begins rolling out to partners for final launch preparations originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 16:00:00 EDT. 10 Sure-Fire Money Moves That Will Always Pay Off Or Not?
The Wall Street Journal is very confident! Using the word guaranteed in the financial world is like telling a pitcher hes got a no-no going in the 6th inning. But apparently the WSJ doesnt care. They have found 10 money moves that will always, always pay off guaranteed! Aside from the catchy title luring me in, I had to see what financial advice they were talking about, and of course, I wanted to weigh in on it too. So, here are their 10 sure-fire money ideas and financial advicewith my side commentary. 1. Max that 401(k) Heres what WSJ says: This is a slam dunk for you. Every dollar you invest saves you money on taxes because it comes off your taxable income. So Uncle Sam is effectively chipping in. I agree with the concept max your savings and youll have more for retirement. You also get a tax-break now, which is great financial advice. But, tax rates are going up next year and although we dont know where tax rates will be in the future, theres a pretty good chance that theyll be much higher than they are now. Tax rates are at a historical low. You may be creating a tax time-bomb that is just waiting to go off! In my opinion, dont fall in love with your 401k!! Anything beyond the company match is up for debate in terms of contributions and really, you should be looking to diversify yourself from a tax perspective any way. 2. Give up the vacation home What WSJ says: Most of the time we use them for a few weeks or months of the year. They cost money to buy. There are annual upkeep, maintenance, condo fees and taxes. Ok, this makes sense. Get rid of excess, trim the fat, reduce expenses. All smart things. But, what if you could buy a vacation home at or near the bottom of the market and you can use it to build True Wealth? That is, of course, you can afford it! 3. Put $5,000 into an IRA account or Roth IRA tax shelter WSJ says: If youre over 50, put in $6,000. And make sure your spouse does too. IRAs are a great deal. There is a big difference between putting into a Roth or a Traditional IRA and that has to do with IRA withdrawals! Again, the idea of saving money is great financial advice! Not everyone is eligible for a Traditional IRA or a Roth for that matter. So make a careful decision when figuring out which retirement account is right for you. 4. Pay off your credit-card debt WSJ: Eat macaroni and cheese for three months if you have to, but pay off those balances. Youre probably paying at least 15% interest. You may be paying a lot more. Youd have to earn maybe 17% before tax on an investment just to keep pace. Boring? Nobodys making 17% these days. So pay off your credit-card debt and brag to all your friends that you just beat Wall Street. Amen!! Paying off credit-card debt is possibly the greatest sure-fire money move you can make. Of course, you knew that piece of financial advice already, but its time to do it! Heres a good tool to knowyour credit-card payoff amount . 5. Fire your banker Heres what WSJ says: If youre like most people, youre probably paying hundreds of dollars a year in account service fees, ATM charges for access to your own money and the like. Im actually not paying account service fees or ATM charges because I dont overdraft and I dont use outside ATMs! 6. Get your tax refund early WSJ: How? By not overpaying your taxes in the first place. Every year, millions of people cheer when they get a check back from Uncle Sam. But that just means they paid too much withholding tax during the year. So Uncle Sam got an interest-free loan. I do like this point, unless of course, you need a tax refund because you simply wont save that extra money! 7. Buy inflation-protected bonds According to WSJ: Treasury inflation-protected securities, or TIPS, arent sexy. They wont make you rich. But theyre guaranteed twice over. Theyre issued by the U.S. government, so they are guaranteed against default. And they are protected against inflation because coupons and principal will adjust to reflect it. Really? Hmm. It seems like everyone has jumped on the TIPS bandwagon and those things are completely oversold leaving an opportunity for a TIPS bubble to burst. So theyre guaranteed by the U.S. government, but it doesnt mean they wont drop in value. Im not saying you dont want some exposure here, but to make it sound like its a no-lose proposition is a little scary. 8. Buy a bread machine WSJ says: If a $50 breadmaker saves you, say, $7 a week on buying bread, thats $350 year. The easiest dough youll make. Modern breadmakers are, well, a piece of cake to operate. The return on investment: 600% in year one and 700% after that. Wow, they are stretching for financial advice now!! Id bet that once the novelty wears off after four or five times using it, youll be right back to buying bread once a week at the grocery store.and youll be out $50 for the bread machine! My wife and I always talk about making bread and then we go buy some at the store. 9. Play hardball with your insurance company WSJ says: Call competitors and ask them to quote you prices for your current house and auto policies. Amen!! Heres how to negotiate your home and auto insurance. 10. Get a freebie from a bank WSJ says: Sign up for a credit card with a big bonus like a free air ticket or weekend hotel stay. Use the card enough to qualify. Then cancel the card. I know its a free airline ticket, but I have never done this mainly because it sounds like such a hassle. I hate calling customer service lines. Everyone deserves a second chance, right? In the world of cheapo tablets, sure! Or at least that's our attitude when it comes to a company like Augen. Sure, it was just about a month ago that it released its $150 GenTouch78 at Kmart, but it's planning some future tablet products and hoping to right all those previous wrongs. According to the statement put out by the company, this new set of "Espresso" tablets will be unveiled at CES 2011 and will span from 7 to 10 inches diagonally. They'll still be aggressively priced and range from $200 to $400, but at least this time around it's planning for some with capacitive touchscreens. Other specs are of the fairly cookie cutter mold: WiFi, an accelerometer and more storage space. No word on what version of Android they'll run, but there's mention of a new "human friendly input." That all sounds much better than the previous GenTouch products we've seen, but by the time January rolls around there's no telling what the tablet landscape could look like. We'll be following this one to see if Augen can keep the caffeine in its system, but hit the break for the full statement and one more render.Continue reading Augen planning its next generation of tablets, not giving up without a fightAugen planning its next generation of tablets, not giving up without a fight originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 02:09:00 EDT. Foursquare offers reward for checking in after STD checkups - Yahoo! News
Foursquare, the social network that allows members to broadcast their location and activities, has joined forces with MTV in an effort to remove the stigma attached with getting screened for sexually transmitted diseases. Members who "check in" for an STD test during the month of September will receive a special virtual "badge."
HP Mini 210 and Mini 5103 officially announced with dual-core Atom power
Netbook makers like Lenovo, Gigabyte and ASUS have been quietly releasing new systems with Intel's new mobile, dual-core N550 processor, but HP's not keeping its use of the fresh chip in 10-inch netbooks a secret... anymore. Just as we've previously heard, the professional-aimed $399 Mini 5103 will be getting a dual-core 1.8GHz processor option, which HP tells us can improve benchmark performance by up to 20 percent without a significant impact on battery life. It's also been updated with a new "espresso" color and will have HP's Day Starter instant-on OS -- no WebOS buried in there yet. On the consumer end, the HP Mini 210 has also been refreshed -- actually, more like gutted -- with a new design. The 10.1-inch netbook is now available in a bunch of cleverly named colors, including crimson red and ocean drive, and has been revamped with a new back that integrates the battery into the bottom of the chassis. Don't worry: the battery is still swappable and you can open the bottom cover to replace the RAM and hard drive. It still has that chiclet keyboard we like so much, the rather hit-or-miss ClickPad touchpad and a Broadcom Crystal Accelerator option for 1080p playback. The Mini 210 will start at $330 with a single core Atom CPU and six-cell battery, but will be available with the N550 processor for a bit more (we're guessing around $75). The full release is after the break and some snazzy hands-on pics are below. New Digg CEO, take note: How social media companies respond to irate users
Days after launching a major revision to its social-news website, Digg has appointed Matt Williams, a former Amazon.com manager, as its new chief executive. And man, does he have some work ahead of him. The overhaul of Digg, which shifts the focus from a page edited by the masses to a personalized news feed, has angered some of its most loyal users. Many Diggers have been very vocal about staging an exodus to rival news site Reddit. Of course, these types of rumblings seem to happen just about any time a large site has its formula tinkered with. Twitter saw backlash recently when it released a feature called Retweet. A loud group that included the service's creator, Jack Dorsey, criticized Retweet for not letting users add a short note to those messages. The small music website TheSixtyOne heard angry chants when it unleashed a simpler version of the service. And such revolts make up practically a bimonthly tradition for Facebook. So how should social media website owners, who find the cries are loudest on their own pages, deal with the attacks? The Times talked to some of those administrators and looked to examples from the past for clues as to how Williams might want to handle the indignation he's inherited. Twitter has millions of passionate and observant users who will notice every time a new button is added or a new "promoted" thing shows up on the site. The San Francisco company provides guidelines for businesses using its social network, and when prompted for Twitter's own philosophy, a spokeswoman highlighted a line from that Best Practices page: "Listen regularly for comments about your company, brand and products -- and be prepared to address concerns, offer customer service or thank people for praise," she quoted. In other words, don't ignore the negativity. Facebook, with 500 million active members, knows push-back perhaps better than anyone. Sometimes the Palo Alto, Calif., developers lose (see: Beacon). Sometimes they win (News Feed). But judging by Facebook's reactions in the past, these issues are usually handled as such: The company lets things stew for a bit and eventually finds either a mountain or a molehill. Molehills disappear rather quickly. Mountains normally get addressed through company blog posts, often by Chief Mark Zuckerberg. Those messages have offered an excuse, some reasoning or an unusual alternative. (To ease privacy concerns, Facebook said users could vote on a sort of Bill of Rights. Few opted to participate, and so the program mostly fell by the wayside.) Beacon, a veritable Everest, resulted in a $9.5-million settlement. Reddit may have benefited the most from Digg users' revolt this week, but the small company has had to deal with tantrums of its own in the past. Though, comparedwith Digg's,"We've never had anything quite like that,"Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian said in an interview with The Times. But Ohanian seems to think Digg is scaling its mountain reasonably well. "It's important to remember that you're still running the site, and you're responsible for doing what's best for it," said Ohanian, who is no longer involved in Reddit's daily operations. "It's impossible to please everyone. And it's important to be wary of the silent majority, who will never let you know how they feel." Digg's response aligns with Ohanian's advice and that of Facebook. Founder Kevin Rose, who was filling in as interim CEO until Tuesday, wrote a blog postaddressing many complaints and offering fixes in the future. A Digg spokeswoman declined to comment for this story. While Rose maintains a great deal of influence at Digg, those decisions may ultimately fall on the shoulders of the new chief. "Introducing change is never easy, and bringing something as radically different as Digg version 4 was bound to generate a strong reaction," Rose wrote in a statementannouncing the hiring of Williams. "We are absolutely listening and really value everyone's feedback as we take Digg in new directions." So Williams will have plenty to mull over as he reshapes the fast-changing company. Rose offered some thoughts in an interview with AllThingsD about Williams' new role: "It's a pain in the ass and something I would never wish on my worst enemy." Have fun, Matt! -- Mark Miliantwitter.com/markmilian Photo: From left to right, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, StumbleUpon founder Garrett Camp, Digg founder Kevin Rose. Google Chrome Is The New Down For Everyone Or Just Me
You hit a site; its down. You immediately reload; its still down. You start to freak out. How the hell are they down again!? Is anyone in charge over there?! WTF?! But quite often, its just you. And you look like an ass for your rant that you just spewed on Twitter (or on Facebook when its Twitter that is down). Thankfully, it looks like Chrome can now potentially save you from thatembarrassment. Tech geeks are very familiar with sites like Down For Everyone Or Just Me (which was incidentally created by a then-Twitter employee and sold earlier this year). You go there, enter a URL and see if others people around the world are having trouble accessing the site as well. But the latest version of Chrome appears to do the same thing for you now, as the blog Rudefox pointed out today. While trying to load Chatroutlette today (like the rest of us) only to find that it was down, the author got a fairly typical browser note that Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to chatroulette.com. But whats interesting is that below that, it reads Other users are also experiencing difficulties connecting to this site, so you may have to wait a few minutes. See, there are some benefits to Google watching us. They can now save us a trip to Down For Everyone Or Just Me. [thanks Tom]

Disqus Analytics Will Give Us More Insight Into Our Audience Even The Trolls
No matter the size of your website, commenters tend to be a smaller subset of your audience. But theyre also often among your most loyal readers who are the most engaged. Wouldnt it be great to know something about those people? Thats what Disqus is trying to nail with a new Analytics offering. While its still in its early stages, the key to Disqus Analytics is that its very simple to use and pull meaningful data from. Youll not only be able to see who your most loyal commenters are, youll be able to see the topics that are clearly the most important when it comes to engagement with your audience. And you can get data about which posts or people are most often liked and which login method your commenters are using to leave comments on various types of posts. As some of you have noticed, we just turned on Disqus comments a few days ago. So far, the system is working excellent. That on top of more community management should hopefully keep the trolls at bay. Well see. With these analytics though, at the very least well know something about the trolls. There are four key areas to the service right now: Snapshot, Activity, People, and Network. From Disqus: The Snapshot page is a quick glance at your communitys pulse. Youll see interesting facts, helpful numbers, and current activity trends. The Activity page serves as the detailed view for all the activity being generated in your community. Under People, youll learn more about your audience than just from looking at numbers and percentages. Finally, the Network page is meant to show how your community benefits from being connected to the largest platform of its kind on the web. The Network area is particularly interesting because of Disqus massive and growing usage. There are nearly 150 million people around the world now that use Disqus on a monthly basis. Disqus notes that theyre currently in the process of testing this Analytics package with a few of their communities, and theyll be slowly rolling it out more over time. Theyre looking for alpha testers, so visit here if youre interested.

Singh spent more than two years and well over $200,000 of his own money battling the case in court, and this past April he finally prevailed. In the process, he became a hero to those challenging the pseudoscience surrounding everything from global warming to vaccines to evolution. Its not necessarily a role he sought for himself, but its one he has embracedhes currently touring the world, talking about his case, libel reform, and how important it is to make sure scientists can speak truthfully and openly.Dont come up with a view, find everybody who agrees with it, and then say, Look at this, I must be right. You have to decide who you trust before you decide what to believe.

Microsoft shows off new controller, with transforming D-pad
The D-pad on the existing 360 controllers is, to put it mildly, utter garbage. If you want to play any games relying on precise movements, such as fighting games, buying a third-party controller is a requirement. Microsoft hopes it has this problem licked, however, and is releasing a controller with a new, updated D-pad on November 9. The catch? You won't be able to buy the controller alone; you'll need to grab the Play and Charge Kit to get it, and the final cost will be $64.99. Read the comments on this post

TweetDeck Warns Of Fake Update, Trojan
As we mentioned earlier today, some third-party Twitter applications may stop working because Twitter has made some big changes this morning regarding how other applications and websites gain access to your Twitter account. Unfortunately, some unfriendly types out there have tried to take advantage of the situation with a fake Tweetdeck update that is actually a trojan horse virus. Tweetdeck posted a warning on its blog yesterday about the fake update, but today will be the real test, as many of us go searching for the real update. Sponsor If you're seeing what I'm seeing this morning (see above), the only place to go is to the official Tweetdeck website. According to Tweetdeck, there are a number of tweets getting passed around urging users to update to the latest version of Tweetdeck. While many do need to update, the only place users should go to download this update is http://www.tweetdeck.com/desktop/. The tweets about the fake update link to a file named "tweetdeck-08302010-update.exe" and often are from the URL http://alturl.com. The Tweetdeck blog warns that many of the suspect tweets include the following: TweetDeck will work until tomorrow, udate now! 1.Download TweetDeck udate ASAP! 2.Update TweetDeck! 3.Hurry up for tweetdeck update! 4.Sorry for offtopic, but it is a critical TweetDeck update. It won't work tomorrow! Trend Micro researcher Paul Ferguson told Network World that the file is "a generic Trojan horse program that is not detected by most antivirus products", so installing the fake update could be harmful and go completely unnoticed. Google Rolling Out 'Priority Inbox' for Gmail
Days after introducing voice calling within Gmail, Google on Tuesday unveiled a "priority inbox" feature within Gmail intended to highlight important messages.
Gmail's "Priority Inbox" sorts important e-mail for you
You know the feeling: opening up your e-mail to find hundreds of messages of varying importance. Some are automated reminders from your favorite sites, some are newsletters you have subscribed to, some are actually from real people trying to contact you, and so on. Separating the wheat from the chaff can be overwhelming much of the time, and even the most carefully crafted filters don't keep up with the ever-changing nature of what's important to you. Google is hoping to address that problem with a new feature in Gmail called Priority Inbox. Aimed at providing users a way to get through their inboxes as efficiently as possible, Priority Inbox tries to learn your e-mail habits in order to decide which messages are important to you, and move them up to the top where you can see them first. The Rise of the Anti-Facebooks
Facebook is dominating social media in almost every country where it hasn't been banned, and the six-year old site shows no signs of slowing down. It's creeping across generations, replacing things like the phone book and introducing tools the masses had no idea they needed. It's also indoctrinating the world into adopting the Mark Zuckerberg Values of "openness," "sharing" and "living your whole life on the Internet." Those values have lead to a cultural movement. But here comes the resistance: a wave of social networking sites that define themselves in opposition to Facebook. Sponsor Privacy Fiends The most prominent example is Diaspora, the distributed, open-source social network all about privacy and control of your data. Diaspora doesn't cite Facebook by name on its Kickstarter page, where its four founders raised 20 times more money than they asked for. But its founders do refer to "large corporate networks who want to tell you that sharing and privacy are mutually exclusive." Diaspora's Kickstarter funding page reflects the demand for a Facebook alternative. The site will launch September 15. Diaspora's founders are followers of Eben Moglen, a professor at Columbia and fierce privacy advocate. Facebook is teaching us to sacrifice privacy for convenience, they argue, giving up our information to advertisers who can then "spy on us for free." They resent Facebook's "flipping of switches" that in the past has made user data public without asking permission. Another site, folkdirect.com, launched in January with a similarly lofty view of privacy: "Your details will never become fodder for targeted advertising campaigns and there are no third party apps to phish your data." Exclusiveness Facebook started as a social networking site for college students. Then high schoolers joined, then our parents and our bosses, then our grandparents. Many of its collegiate members were not pleased. CollegeOnly founder Josh Weinstein remembers how he and his friends were just as anxious to join Facebook as they were for freshman orientation. CollegeOnly launched a social network for "connecting student bodies" last week. When you graduate, you're out. In the promo video, Weinstein turns to the camera and asks, "Don't you wish your social network were college only?" Yet-to-launch mobile startup Scoop has a similar idea. Maybe age or school-affiliation isn't important, but exclusiveness still is. ASMALLWORLD is an invitation-only social network for "sophisticated" and "influential" people. "Trusted and loyal ASW members who meet certain criteria have the privilege of inviting a limited number of their friends to the network. If you know someone with this privilege, you can ask them to invite you. If not, please be patient and continue to ask around in your own personal and professional circles," the site says. Multiple personalities Facebook does let you target what you upload to specific friends. But Facebook doesn't want you to splinter your identity. Throughout its history, Facebook has encouraged users to use their real names, upload their real birthdays and use their real identities to log on to other sites. Hibe is a yet-to-launch social network based around controlling which personality you project to whom, a concept its creator calls "Social Web 3.0." "We are opening the way for a new social networking experience that goes beyond Facebook," the site says. Social Networking After FacebookA presentation about forthcoming social network Hibe.com, which emphasizes privacy and fractured online identities. Just last week we wrote about Facebook competitor Orkut introducing a similar feature with friend groups. The blog post announcing the feature was titled, "You're not always the same person. Why should it be any different on the Web?" And all the other things that annoy you about Facebook "Don't you wish your social network were college only?"-CollegeOnly founder Josh Weinstein Wish Facebook were simpler? Twitter. More professional? LinkedIn. None of these services has achieved a user base anywhere near the size of Facebook's alleged 500 million. But Twitter and LinkedIn each have a sizable following, and many of the just-launched or soon-to-launch anti-Facebooks are tapping into real demand. There is no single alternative to Facebook. But maybe there could be two. or three. Or hundreds. What do you think - could any of these sites (or a combination of them) ever replace Facebook? Discuss
Throw Another Faggot On The Fire [Video]
Andy Griffith, you foul-mouthed man. Kudos to you if you lived in the 80s (like us) and watched a great movie staring Tom Berenger and Andy Griffith called Rustlers Rhapsody. Its a classic 80s flick that pokes fun at the old western movies with the good guys (who wear white) and the bad guys (who always wear black). I remember this quirky comedy for a few reasons. First, it also stared Marilu Henner as a prostitute trying to break down the walls of cowboy Rex OHerlihan (Berenger) which is a good thing for a kid Second, it featured Andy Griffith as a mean cattle baron who muttered the phrase Throw Another Faggot on the Fire. Thats not something you usually hear from Sheriff Andy Taylor.
If Youve Got Social Media Fatigue, UR DOIN IT WRONG
Just as I was reading Paul Carrs latest column about quitting social media, my husband looked at his phone and broke into a huge smile. He is a graphic designer and has long been a fan of Chank Fonts. Earlier that day, hed taken a picture of a retro-looking podiatrist office, posting it on Twitter with the word Font-o-licious. It didnt go viral. It didnt become a trending topic. It didnt get him 1,000 new followers or even attract much attention at all. But it was noticed by Chank Diesel of Chank Fonts who Tweeted Im gonna dedicate my next font to that type-savvy podiatrist and started following my husband. Here in front of me was one of those serendipitous moments of social media collapsing space-and-time. These moments dont change the world, but theyre exactly what made social media so addictive in the first place. Imagine an industry hero of yours who seemed untouchable creating a product just because of a random picture you posted on an ever-moving stream of colliding information that he happened to see. Here, in the guise of my beaming husband, was the perfect articulation for why I think peopleeven my close friends who declare dramatic social media bankruptcy were just doing it wrong. What made social media a phenomenon were moments like these. Passively connecting in-and-out of a persistent conversation with people you know and see everyday, people you know but have lost touch with, and people you dont know but share interests with. People who in a more efficient world, you might have known. Its about making relationships more efficient. My parents know what Ive been up to by reading my Twitter feed, so when I call home I dont have to answer a vague question like What have you been up to? I answer a specific question like What country are you traveling to now? If a friend is looking for a job at a given company, I cant always remember who I know who works there, but with LinkedIn, I dont have to. And seeing what an old flame looks like on Facebook never gets old. If these selling points sound horribly clich its because they are commonplace reasons most everyday people use these sites, and indeed, the same reasons why the founders of most social media companies started these sites. But the sites worked too well at amassing fans, friends and followers, creating micro-economies where people sought to cash in on their would-be fame and influence. And that is when the problemsand inevitably the fatigue started. People competed for how many friends and followers they could rack up and how many RTs they could get in a day, seeing it as evidence of how cool or smart or influential they were. Thats when social media got mercenary and soulless. Heres a clue: If you find yourself saying (Fill-in-the-blank-social-media-site) used to be soooooo much better before everyone was on it you are using the site wrong. You are following too many people, you are using it too much, you are strangling the pretty, little bunny. The beauty of these sites is you control how many friends you see, and how many of them see you. So if you used to love it and now hate it, well, you know what they say about when you point a finger. Three are pointing back at you. Sometimes metrics can be a bad thing and beware of any so-called social media consultant who tells you otherwise. Whats the value of a Retweet or a Like? Its roughly the equivalent to sitting next to someone during a keynote who nods his head at a salient point. Someone hitting a button in front of them is hardly a heady endorsementnowhere near the impact of someone calling you to tell you about a story he read. That actually takes more than one-second of attention and work. Everyone touts stats showing that recommendations are the most trusted form of advertising. Thats because in the old world recommendations were inefficient. I had to be so moved by, say, the service at a restaurant, that I proactively called people to tell them about it, or it stuck in the front of my mind solidly enough that when someone asked Where should we go to dinner? it came flying out. The power of personal recommendation doesnt carry over in a world where its as easy as clicking a button because the caliber of that recommendation is necessarily lowered by taking out barriers. Of course not everyone becoming fatigued with social media whored themselves out to anyone who would follow or friend them, bartering likes and retweeting anyone who said something nice about them. Indeed, Mr. Carr locked his account and only followed a core group of friends. His biggest complaint was simply that he used it too muchupdating any thought in his head so that he didnt take time to mull and form that idea or joke until it was perfect, and that he was distracted. This is where the flood of apps may be making the problem worse, not better. After some early security glitches when Twitter desktop apps published direct messages, I decided to only use Twitter.com and update by text message to interact with the service. Thats downright luddite in my TechCrunch/iPhone world, but by going to Twitter, rather than Twitter always flooding to me, I forced myself to keep my Twitter feed as manageable to keep up with as email. Whats more, when I travel to places like China or have a big deadline, I dont log onto Twitter for weeks. When I come back its still here. Both Twitter and I continue to go about our lives without one another just fine. I dont think changing an avatar to green saves Iran. But I wouldnt say Twitter is making us all more detached and stupid either. I just like life with social media better than life without it, for silly little moments like the one my husband had with Chank Fonts. Same thing Id say about email or a mobile phone or TiVo or a Blackberry. I realize that doesnt make gripping blog copy like Twitter-democratizing-the-world or Twitter-totally-sucking, but I think for most of the average users out there, thats the Twitter they know and the Twitter that will continue to steadily grow, all this hype and backlash aside.

Motorola says leaked Droid X Android 2.2 build won't be updated to the official release
Can't say this is a surprise, but Motorola posted a note on its support forums today warning users Droid X users against upgrading to that leaked Android 2.2 build or any of those custom ROMS that're out there -- they'll be cut off from the official upgrade when it hits in early September and potentially "stuck on the leaked version." Ouch. Of course, that's the risk you take when you start flashing your phone with unofficial firmware, but between this, eFUSE, and those cease and desist letters, it certainly feels like Motorola is decidedly unhappy that anyone would have the gall to hack or tweak one of its handsets, even if the phone in question is the size of a small tank and marketed by aggressive murderous robot hands insisting that it "does" everything one can think of with no restrictions. Contrast that with HTC, which is not only at peace with the hacking community, but even takes the initiative to resolve similar problems. Of course, no one would care about any of this if Motorola would just release stock Android builds for its devices as soon as they're ready, but why learn that lesson when it's possible to waste money developing Blur and adopting painfully annoying staggered OTA rollout schedules at the behest of carriers? That would just be silly. [Thanks, Matthew]Motorola says leaked Droid X Android 2.2 build won't be updated to the official release originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 21:03:00 EDT. Roku cuts price ahead of possible $99 Apple TV upgrade
Roku announced today that it is dropping the prices of its line-up of set-top boxes. The pricing changes come just days before Apple is rumored to be unveiling a major revision to its Apple TV set-top box based on streaming content. Roku currently sells three models of its digital video player: the basic Roku SD, the mid-range Roku HD, and the top-end Roku XR. The Roku SD is now priced $20 less at $59.99, and the Roku HD and Roku XR are priced $30 less at $69.99 and $99.99 respectively. The Roku SD only streams in standard definition and is limited to analog output. The Roku HD is the original device, and includes both analog as well as HDMI and digital audio output for streaming up to 720p content. The Roku XR adds 802.11n WiFi and a USB port, and will be able to output 1080p with a firmware update scheduled for later this year. The company noted that most content providers will still be streaming at 720p, but the increased resolution should come in handy for a new USB streaming "channel" currently in testing. Apple is holding its annual music-related media event this Wednesday (don't miss our live coverage of the announcements), and persistent rumors have suggested that Apple will announcealong with new iPodsa major update to the Apple TV. The device is said to be built around Apple's A4 processor and will run a variation of iOS. The new device also expected to ditch the included hard drive in favor of sufficient flash storage to stream video directly from iTunes. Apple may change the name to "iTV" (the original name before the product launched in 2007), and rumors have pegged the price of the new device at $99. Read the comments on this post

7 Things Digg.com Drove Into the Ground
Digg, as we knew it, is dead. To make matters worse, Digg v4 is in complete chaos. Angry power users who were stripped of their adjective are attempting to fight back by rallying people to Digg articles from rival sites. At one point today, 12 of the 16 links on Diggs front page were pointing to Reddit.com or related stories. The inmates are running the asylum (dot com). As whats left of the Digg community struggles in vain to find funny pictures of cats and articles from Gawker.com, fear and panic are sure to set in. During this period of turmoil, many will long for a simpler time. But their nostalgia for Old Digg will be misplaced. While New Digg may or may not prove worthless, Old Digg had to die. The site had too much power, and was responsible for taking some of the greatest topics on the Internet and running them straight into the ground. Here are seven examples. read more

Custom Droid X ROMs starting to break loose, eFuse be damned
Despite Motorola's best intentions to the contrary, the Droid X has been making steady progress toward viable custom ROMs, first with root access, then with a recovery method... and now, at long last, we're starting to get the first few glimpses at legit cooked firmware. The two options we're seeing so far are Sapphire -- originally designed for the Droid of old -- and a so-called "FlyX" ROM from longtime contributor Birdman. In both cases, the benefits of eschewing Motorola's standard builds are pretty obvious: you get Froyo, root, and a host of apps and capabilities preferred by the superuser crowd like surcharge-free mobile hotspot access. The process is a little involved to get these bad boys installed at this point, but with time, we're willing to bet it becomes a pretty painless endeavor. Follow the break for a quick video of Sapphire booting into stock Froyo on the X -- a tantalizing sight, indeed. Toy Story 3 Made A Billion Dollars How Many Other Films Have?
Disney has been touting the fact that Toy Story 3 passed the $1 billion mark at the box office this weekend. Is it that big of a deal? Well, looking in absolute dollar terms, yes. Sort of. The film is the first animated film to break the threshold and only the seventh overall. And, with [...]
Who'd Make the Best Fighting-Game Drinking Buddies?
Drinking buddies. Wing men. Boozin' brothers. We've all got them -- those guys whose entire friendship is entirely based on a shared passion for the pub. We at Asylum have given plenty of thought to drinking buddies in the past, taking the time to consider who'd make the best animal and the pro-wrestling drinking buddies. The next logical step, of course, was to compile a list of the ultimate fighting-game drinking buddies. Game: "Street Fighter II Turbo" Character: Zangief Role in the group: The lovable Russian Drink of choice: Vodka neat "Street Fighter" is full of awesome characters. Everymen Ken, Guile and Ryu are a bit dull; Blanka is liable to electrocute you; and the less said about M. Bison and Dhalsim the better. In our eyes, we'd choose between Chun-Li, E. Honda and Zangief. Well, Chun-Li isn't old enough to get into a pub and E. Honda is just too fat to sit on a bar stool. We had to go for the massive Russian. Keep reading for six more characters we'd like to do shots with. ... Game: "Tekken" Character: King Role in the group: The one with the animal head Drink of choice: Rum and Diet Coke Geeks among you will point out that King is in fact dead, and therefore won't reply to our Facebook invite to join us down at the bar. Well, this is all hypothetical, so just let us fantasize about drinking with an orphaned Mexican street fighter who becomes a monk and fights to get the cash to build an orphanage. Game: "Killer Instinct" Character: Chief Thunder Role in the group: The wise one Drink of choice: A Corona with lime? We've never met a Native American chief before, let alone a Native American chief who's fought in the "Killer Instinct" tournament, let alone a Native American chief who's fought in the "Killer Instinct" tournament and can do a reverse triplax. This was an easy decision. The thing is, would he want us to call him "Chief Thunder" all the time, or would just "Chief" be okay? Game: "Super Smash Bros." Character: Fox McCloud Role in the group: The one with military service Drink of choice: Erdinger, for some reason Fox McCloud is one of every young boy's childhood heroes, and thankfully his appearance in the fantastic "Super Smash Bros" made him eligible for our next bender. A consummate professional, Fox would make a great drinking buddy, telling his tales of intergalactic warfare. Game: "Mortal Kombat" Character: Sonya Blade Role in the group: The female friend Drink of choice: Scotch on the rocks Up to now our table is surrounded by an anthropomorphic fox, a Native American chief, a man with a leopard head and a massive Russian in a Speedo. Suffice it to say, we could use a woman's touch. That's where Sonya comes in. The original fighting-game hottie, Sonya is a special-forces agent who we reckon would be delightful company. Game: "Star Wars: Masters of Teras Karsi" Character: Chewbacca Role in the group: The hairy one Drink of choice: Chewie is a beer guy, surely OK, so "Masters of Teras Karsi" isn't exactly a classic. In fact, it was a much-maligned part of Lucasfilm's continuing merchandise onslaught, but that doesn't matter. It was a fighting game and Chewie was in it, so he's here in the pub with us. Game: "Double Dragon V: The Shadow Fall" Character: Billy Lee Role in the group: The normal(ish) guy Drink of choice: Lager We're talking about the cult-classic fighting game on the SNES. Billy seems like an average kind of guy, and every group of buddies needs a level-headed one. Who did we leave off our list? Let us know in the comments.

Reddit, Digg Rivalry Heats Up With #DiggRevolt
The brand new Digg is under fire on its first ever Monday from both its most loyal users and the competition at Reddit. Launched last Wednesday, Digg power users have launched a Digg Revolt today, some calling it "Quit Digg Day," and the Reddit community has embraced the feud. Reddit links have been dominating the Digg.com Top News feed throughout this morning. At one time, six of the top seven stories were from Reddit. On top of that, Digg's traffic has plummeted 33 percent overnight, according to Alexa.com. Said one Digg power user, @0boy, "Since @Digg and @kevinrose haven't listened to their core users, I hate to say it but they deserve this mess." Reddit is taking advantage of the controversy. It posted a "self-announcement" on its homepage for those "new around here" and even altered its logo to include a shovel (see below), an apparent shot at Digg. Many of Digg's power users have been offended by the redesign SocialBlade reported after its launch: This hardworking detailed Digg community feels as though they have been short-handed with the new launch of Digg v4 since its decision to allow auto-feeds, the demise of power Digger's and the obliteration of their history on Digg, almost nullifying their existence. Some Digg power users have taken to Twitter to share their disgust with the new site, and the #diggrevolt hashtag is going strong. In addition to the above, @0boy also tweeted, "The saddest part: hundreds of avid @digg users saw this coming, clear as day. @mrbabyman @msaleem @thenextweb @ltgenpanda 100+ more." Digg CEO Kevin Rose was silent for much of this morning, as Reddit began flooding Digg, but finally tweeted this afternoon, "Digg update: As mentioned on TWiT yesterday, we're working hard to fix the source diversity part of the digg algorithm, more news soon."

Reddit Game the New Digg by Pushing 7 Stories on Digg FrontPage
Earlier making Digg FrontPage used to be a big deal and specially when this new Digg layout and system is under controversy, Reddit another rivalry social bookmarking site, gamed the system and made 7 of its stories on Digg FrontPage. Here is image proof of Reddit hitting Digg homepage: Its going to be interesting to see Kevin reaction with this new buzz which made every loyal digg users stunned. Meanwhile here are some comments from Digg user on those Reddit stories which are promoted to Digg FP: Right now, I am digging all reddit submissions as fast as I can. Kevin Rose killed Digg, now WE WILL BURY IT! Digg didnt deserve this, but Kevin Rose sure does. He will pay through his website. The only reason I stayed around since V4 started was so I could bury anything self-submitted and promote anything bashing V4. Now Im getting so many errors its not even worth sticking around to do that. Im leaving. How do I delete my account? No, seriously. Is it under settings? I looked but couldnt really find anything. One thing which every digger is hating the auto submission from RSS feeds. As with this feature digg is no more a user generated community and becoming more like Twitter and Facebook, more followers more popularity. Whats your take about new Digg? Xbox Live Gold price increasing November 1 in US, UK, Canada, and Mexico
Well, this is sad and unexpected: Microsoft's Major Nelson just announced that Xbox Live Gold will be getting more expensive in the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico starting November 1. A single month will go from $7.99 to $9.99, three months will go from $19.99 to $24.99, and the yearly sub will now be $59.99, up from $49.99. Yes, it's super lame, but to make up for it Microsoft's offering a discounted $40 one-year Gold sub starting November 1 -- a nice deal if your subscription is set to expire around then, we suppose. We're definitely wondering on why Microsoft is jacking Live prices right before launching Kinect and the gaming-focused Windows Phone 7, though -- we've heard theories ranging from an attempt to increase Entertainment and Devices revenue to a simple inflation adjustment. We'll poke around -- and we're guessing there's about to be a run on Gold upgrade cards. Google Chrome Shows Off What HTML5 Can Do With Arcade Fire Video
Google is a big proponent of HTML5, especially for video and rich graphics in the browser. To show off what HTML5 can do, Google Chrome teamed up with the Arcade Fire and director Chris Milk to create a custom interactive video for their song, We Used To Wait. The experience is called The Wilderness Downtown and is best viewed in Chrome or other HTML5-compliant browser. You start by typing in the address of the house you grew up in, then it loads a video of a guy in a hoodie running through the streets. Different windows pop open on your screen, some with graphics, some with videos. Google Maps and Street View images of your old neighborhood are incorporated into the video. All the video is in HTML5, different windows open up triggered by the music, and you even see a fly-over of your neighborhood based on Google Maps routing API. The graphics are pretty impressive too. Shadows of birds are superimposed over the Google Maps birds-eye view of your neighborhood, and animated trees are plopped into the street using the Street View image and some boundary detection software. You can also write a note to your former self in a beautiful tree-root font or draw a picture, all using HTML5 font and drawing tools. These notes and drawing will be used in future Arcade Fire concerts. The video is almost as cool as playing Quake in your browser. Digg User Rebellion Continues: Reddit Now Rules the Front Page
Reddit has taken over the front page of Digg. If Kevin Rose and the rest of the Digg team thought that a long weekend would be enough to calm the furor over the latest changes to the popular site, they were clearly mistaken. Not only did Digg's users declare today "quit Digg day," but in order to protest Digg's new auto-submission system, users are now upvoting every Reddit story on the site. These stories are being submitted to Digg by Reddit itself through the auto-submission system. Sponsor A sample of current Digg comments: Digg is dead long live Reddit AWESOME! MORE REDDIT ARTICLES IN TOP NEWS! Kevin, why don't you just redirect the whole site to Reddit? Suicide is an understatement. Digg committed DIGGICIDE! Long live reddit. It's not unusual for a site to experience a significant user backlash after a major redesign. By announcing the redesign during the big Digg party at SXSW in Austin earlier this year, the company tried to soften the blow. Over the last few weeks, Digg also opened up the beta version of the new site to a very large number of testers. By the time the site finally went live for everybody last week, though, the backlash was almost immediate. When we talked to Digg's then-CEO Jay Adelson at SXSW, he noted that Digg was quite aware that some of its users would not be too happy with the new submission system. Not only does this new system take away power from Digg's most active users, but in the eyes of many of them, it also currently favors big publishers like the BBC, Engadget, Wired and College Humor. Digg invited a number of well-known publishers (including ReadWriteWeb and most of our direct competitors) to submit their feeds early on during the beta test. For years now, Digg's unofficial etiquette stated that users should never submit their own content. The new submission system, however, now encourages publishers to submit their own stories and many are doing so. The fact that a link to Leo Laporte's Google Buzz stream appeared on the Digg front page earlier this weekend was apparently the last straw for many. It remains to be seen what the Digg team can do to turn things around. While many users are unhappy about the site simply not working properly, the main reasons for the current backlash involve the fundamentals of the Digg v4 redesign. For now, the one site that is definitely profiting from Digg's troubles is Reddit. Image used courtesy of Media Caffeine. Discuss

HP's Phil McKinney teases three mystery prototypes on Twitter
Well, this is certainly interesting -- that's HP CTO Phil McKinney pictured above in a pair of redacted shots that were posted to Twitter by HP's Mark Budgell. Described only as "early protos" by McKinney himself, the pictures show what appears to be phone-sized device, a tablet-sized device and, perhaps most curiously, something on McKinney's wrist (all mysteriously blacked out). Before you get your hopes up too much about a new wave of webOS devices, however, you might want to take a look at the second part of Budgell's tweet, which encourages folks to vote for McKinney's SXSW 2011 panel -- a panel in which McKinney promises to make some "bold predictions for the future - backed up with a number of breakthrough prototypes," and specifically talk about what the future will look like in "5 to 10 years." Now, we can't be certain of course, but that doesn't exactly suggest these are right around the corner. Behind The Bidding War: The Real Reasons Why HP And Dell are So Desperate For 3Par
As I was writing this, news of the HP / Dell bidding war for 3PAR broke on the front page of Yahoo. This made me laugh, as it typified just how crazy this story has becomefew things outside of a bidding war will make a storage acquisition sexy enough to make mainstream news. At $30, HPs current offer is the sixth bid, a 200 percent premium over 3PARs previous $10 share price. Not only is this insane, but its also nearly unprecedented in M&A history. And since 3PAR is trading above $32 the market thinks Dell will bid even higher. First Off, Is 3PAR Really THAT Unique? Yes and no. 3PAR is a classic disruption play, its value proposition based on the premise that unused storage is wastefuloften times just 10% to 25% of allocated disk space is actually used. 3PARs thin provisioning technology enables disk space to be allocated only when applications need capacity, greatly reducing IT management costs. Think of it as storage on a just-enough and just-in-time basis. In the cloud era, pre-allocation of storage is especially wasteful, because on-demand storage and computing services delivered via the internet have wide variability and less deterministic usage patterns. This makes 3PAR a great fit for data centers, and its partly why the technology is suddenly perceived as very valuable. Not surprisingly large storage vendors have been slow to adopt technologies like 3PARs for a simple reason: making storage more efficient ultimately means selling less gear and is essentially akin to committing commercial suicide. EMC CEO Joe Tucci actually once went on record admitting as much saying If I only have hardware and I just keep helping to make you more and more efficient at less and less cost, eventually Im going to hit a wall and its going to be tough for me to make money. HPs Vanishing R&D Budget and The Mark Hurd Effect This classic Innovators dilemma definitely applies to HP. But something else has hamstrung its ability to innovate in high-end storage, a market HP has been a leader in for many years. And its correlated to former CEO Mark Hurds recent firing. Word on the street is Hurd wasnt let go for his affair or even for his embellishment of trivial expense reports. Instead the board kicked him out because his employee approval rating was absolutely atrocious. And the reason employees hated him is because he traded short-run profits for long-term innovation by laying off entire design teams and killing HPs R&D budgettake a look at this chart and compare HP to Cisco and IBM, both storage leaders. In this way, I believe acquiring 3PAR is actually the beginning of a secular trend for HP in using M&A to make good on the companys lack of organic innovation. Yes thats right, believe it or not, the real reason why HPs board is obsessed with 3PAR is closely correlated to Hurds departuredivisions like HPs storage group simply havent kept pace with peers. I used to sell to HPs storage groups (as well as Dell and 3PAR) and have plenty of friends who tell me that projects have been canned and innovation has languished. Dell is Desperate for Similar Reasons Innovation within Dell is even more of an oxymoron. If you thought HPs R&D allotment was low, compare it to Dells. Dell is not an engineering driven company. They are a system integrator desperate for growth outside of the personal computing market. And storage consolidation threatens Dell for another reason. Storage has traditionally been like a cross selling catalog, with vendors filling in their product portfolios by OEMing equipment from othersDell actually resells EMCs high-end storage gear today. But these cross-sell deals are becoming more tenuous to defend as vendors build out more complete portfolios. This is because cloud computing requires complex virtualized resource allocation, management and provisioning. Vendors are increasingly moving up the stack in providing services beyond hardware, which is all but a commodity. Owning 3PAR would give Dell a chance to stay in the game and complement the low end storage solutions it acquired from EqualLogic in 2007. And the Dell board is prepared to break the bank since there is a scarcity of other good high end storage virtualization plays (Pillar Data and Compellent are two of the largest, but dont have 3PARs traction). Why HP Will Probably End Up with 3PAR So there you have it. With its DNA as a system integrator, Dell doesnt have a hope in hell of organically growing complex ASICs and software like 3PAR has, and is desperate to move up the food chain and stop reselling EMCs portfolio. And the HP board is tacitly admitting it needs to rectify the fact that Mark Hurd sort of killed the HP. Invent culture. 3PAR would give HP several hundred R&D focused engineers and a talented ASIC team. The interesting thing about this bidding war is that it conveys a larger lesson about why M&A often fails. Its easy to listen to investment bankers and overpay on acquisitions. But its much harder to actually handle post-merger integration. Dell is the perfect example. They have essentially no precedent for running an ASIC team, and would take a company like 3PAR that spent 25% of
